Toneczar Halophase Waitlist Update...

Just got an email from Ed at Toneczar, and apparently he's finally working through his backlog of halophase waiting list folks.

I haven't really been in the need for a phaser for a couple years. I'm really happy with my Psilocybe, but this is the holy grail of phasers right? I've had my name on the list for a couple years and I can have one in two months if I drop a good chunk of cash.

What say you? Do I pop for an excessive phaser I don't need just because it's the phaser? Do I spend even more money on the polish job that he's charging extra for, or keep it matte black for stealth purposes? The $400 could be better spent, but hey, will I be at the top of a waitlist when I've got it ready to blow?

Convince me.

I also got my email a few days ago. I have (in the intervening two years) decided not to buy it, because I have only ever seen one bassist speak from experience and say it's worth the money, and honestly it seems like his particular M.O. is to collect expensive and rare pedals and just proclaim that they are the best in the world. I'm just not going to drop $400 on a purely fetishistic item unless there will be naked women involved.

I was actually going to hand my space in line to someone else, but then Ed said he would not allow that.

I say you buy it and flip it to a guitarist. If you end up loving the thing, then sell the fun-guy to offset the cost.

OR if you're really in it to win it:

*Buy 'base model' matte black Halophaze
*Hand polish with a dremel
*Sell to the guy who drives this:

*PROFIT!!!!

Buy it and then sell for double on TGP. Seems to be how things work in that realm.

Yeah, buy it just to try it - it's the only way to find out whether it is the holy grail or just hype. You won't lose any money in case of selling it later.

Not looking for profits, just looking to not give up another two years waiting list time if I did want to buy it later, trying to recapture my youth, "Rosebud" trickling from my lips.

Any personal preferences on the matte finish verses the polish?

IMO if you buy it, the choices re color are the following:
If you are pretty sure you'll re-sell it, then get the black one because everybody on TGP who wants one wants to pay the lower price.
If you think you might keep it, get the chrome one because the chrome is one of the big reasons to fetishize and covet this item.

Considering you can flip it and likely recoup the entire cost, there's no reason not to unless you are cash strapped.

And selfishly I would like to actually hear some clips of it on bass. That said, as somebody who has gotten very good at predicting what phasers will sound like on bass based on guitar clips, I think it will sound somewhat like a higher headroom/cleaner phase 90 with most the beautiful subtleties lost on bass.

Quite a few high end, boutique phasers are more subtle with a lot of sweetness and sparkle in the high end that sounds wonderful on guitar but is blunted on bass. That's my fear with the Halophaze.

Honestly, I don't tend to flip much if any gear as I've got a permanent case of inverse "buyers remorse" where I fear I'll regret getting rid of something at some later date. Psychologists call this hoarding. You can easily spot us by our living quarters being stacked floor to ceiling with junk.

Your words, of course, carry the most weight on here regarding phaser purchases, and you're actually doing a decent job of convincing me not to pop for it with your extremely reasonable last 'graph.
