Tried to use a compressor.. mixed results!

I have a Behringer Autocom Pro that I have had for like 2 or 3 years I bought for a PA and never used it. So I thought what the heck, lets try it with my bass. I stuck it in the effects loop on my amp and it was very wierd. It made my bass sound very metallic.
I engaged the auto switch and I lost all sound unless I struck the strings VERY hard. So I put it back on manual. I tried what seemed like every combination of knobs possible for about 45 minutes and never found a usable volume range with out the adding a very metallic sound. Any help?

cheap compressors, or at least compressors not designed for use with basses, can suck the low end and tone overall out of a signal. low end is the first to go usually. might just be the compressor itself. compression is not something to be used heavy-handedly on bass in most instances... just enough to even things out overall. i personally don't use any except to tame drastic peaks.
