Tried VT, Boss and a bunch of others... need OD advice:

So it seems to me the vast majority of "Bass Overdrive" pedals are actually bass DISTORTION pedals.... with very little finesse to them at all. The worst of them destroy low end, the best of them still have way too much gain even at thier lowest settings.

I'm looking for a pedal that adds upper harmonic content and overdrive... not distortion. The video below is an example of the overall CHARACTER I'm looking for, despite being about too notches more actual overdrive than I'm looking for...

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

PS - Please no $300+ boutique pedals! I cant afford them!

EarthQuaker Devices' Monarch is a fairly good overdrive for bass and it retains a lot of low end. I wouldn't say it's exactly the character you're looking for, but it definitely is good for bass and it is priced really well.

Check out the Xotic BB Bass Preamp. Does pretty good OD. Also, the Fulltone OCD is a really nice overdrive on bass (haven't tried it myself though. only heard it). Lastly, try a Proco Vintage Reissue Rat with the Ruetz Mod. This is something I have tried and the mod takes it from an aggressive guitar distortion to a warmer bass overdrive. I really liked that pedal a lot.

Fuzzrocious dark driving, especially if you get one with external knobs for tone and gain.

That track sounds to me like distortion.

Kinda like what a Boss ODB-3 would produce:

I think the Dark Driving is a distortion. Some pedals I forgot to mention earlier are the Way Huge Pork Loin and Green Rhino. The Pork Loin gets a lot of praise around here.

I use an MXR M80 and get a tone close to what you describe... My buddy has a the Hartke bass attack pedal, it has a harmonics knob, which sounds like what you are looking for

Check out the Creation Audio Holy Fire and the DDyna Thinman. Both have nice dynamics and low-gain drive.

That doesnt really sound like overdrive from pedals to me. try cranking an all tube amp and you will get that sound too.

The VT pedal is an Ampeg emulator, so it is more OD pedal than distortion. It does not have too much gain. And you can try the Sansamp BDDI which has less gain then the VT bass.

Dark driving is definitely a overdrive. That sounds like an overdriven tube amp. If thats still too much you can tame it down with the trim pot. It kicked my bad monkey right off my board.

This might be right, but the Bad Monkey is a good OD pedal for its price.

From my own personal experience, the [sfx] Red Dragon is an awesome pedal, and falls into light OD territory-even at full gain the saturation is light, pushing just past clean. It also has a tone control that if I remember correctly is based on a FET preamp that in and of itself will add some harmonics and "sheen" to your tone. Also, it has a really tiny form factor if pedalboard space is tight.

If I had an all-tube amp, I wouldn't need the pedal...

That seem sto me to be more of a fuzz / distortion. Not really what I was looking for... thanks for all the other suggestions guys.... gonna try and source some of these out!

Pork loin is an awesome pedal with smooth OD. Very subtle OD, not aggressive IMO.

I had one and foolish sold it...

Good Luck!

I'd also recommend the B3k, but since you probably can't afford it, the Tech 21 Oxford's overdrive sounds meaner than the VT bass' overdrive.

I've gone through so many different ODs that I've lost count. Just when I think I've found "the one", another one comes along and bests it.

Right now, my flavor of the month is the Digitech Hardwire Tube Overdrive, which is basically an improved Bad Monkey. Since I've always been a fan of the BM, I figured an even better version of it would suit my needs and I was not disappointed.

I also have an Exar TaBASSco and it is quite good as well, though I currently have mine for sale in the Classified section.

+ 1 on the Oxford which to my experience is very effective in the band mix.
