Triggering Samples AND Playing SYNTH live

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all! I've done a stack of reading of old TB threads but couldn't quite find what I wanted . . .

I am interested in triggering .WAVs/.MP3s with a midi controller or foot switch (like the Roland PK5) as well as playing keyboard/synth sounds with aforementioned, or a secondary, device (like a keyboard).

Would it be cheaper to buy a separate sampling unit (like the Digi Jamman, or the BOSS RC-20) and a separate synth unit (a vintage synth perhaps or an affordable newer MIDI-compatible unit) as opposed to buying an all in one kinda unit (like a Roland Fantom Rackmount unit which cost big bucks)? Or is there a cheaper unit that does synth AND sampling that doesn't cost the world. I don't mind if it's rackmount or not.

I want to be able to trigger sound FX in one part of the song and play synth in other parts of the song. I may use separate MIDI controllers (I.E. PK-5 and Midi Keyboard) so that is not an issue.

Oh and obviously I'm trying to stay away from computers because it doesn't suit my live set up.

Thanks TalkBassers

have the synth parts be a "sample", and trigger them with the same unit?

I've thought of that but I want the option of playing the instrument if need be.

I Dont believe theres something out there that isnt a work station that is going to allow you to both play synth and samples. The closest thing i can think of is the korg micro sampler, but its not really a synth and i believe the sampling power is kind of low. If you a quality synth and a quality sampler your probably going to have to get dedicated hardware for each unless you wanna use a laptop with plugins and sampling software. I have the jam man and its a fun looping pedal, and can be loaded up with samples, although I have personally not tried this so i cant really comment, but i would think it wouldnt be as effective as a dedicated sampling unit.

I'm really a sampling noob, so I really feel like i'm not going to be the one answering your questions, but as far as I understand ( I have no experience) you could get something like this for your samples. http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--AKAMPC500

i used to play in a band where i was the keyboard and sampler guy. I used a Roland D10 as a midi controller and a PC with a soundblaster AWE32 sampler card. After that experiance i would NOT recommend using a computer in a live setup.
I suggest a midi controller keyboard or PK5 foot pedal, and an old (and now reasonably cheap) rack mount sampler like the AKAI or Yamaha S3000 from 10 years ago, which have synth sounds, but also allow *.wav samples too.

I currently play bass and also use the Roland GK-3B hex pickup and a Roland GR-20 guitar/bass synthesizer with the Boss GT-10B multi effects.
