True Bypass blender/loop

Sign in to disble this ad
I've been looking at one cause I had the idea of getting either a Boss ODB-3 or a Keeley modded Ibanez Tube Screamer of some sort and putting it in a loop with my tone bender so they can be turned on simultaneously (spelling?). The only thing I'm concerned about is low end loss with going through a general looper. So at this point I'm looking into a loop-master single loop size unit that has a blend option. I did look at the Barge Concepts and the Xotic X-blender but I have no need for the extra options in them. Anyone know of any reliable units that fit my description above?

Wait, you want to stack another gain pedal with a tone bender? Are you sure you want to do that that seems a bit overboard to me, like as in you'd get a ton of mush.

But if you really want to do it, do you even want the clean blend function or will a normal bypass looper do it?

You just need to construct a Loop Box to do this, or you could buy one. What you do is you both effects on all the time, using the Loop Box to direct the signal away from it and then you just click to get your distortion. Altough the mixing thing is a little more difficult to work around, im sure if you check out some of the DIY Stomp Box forums there will be some info on it. One cool pedal that do this well is the Radial Tonebone, which has a Boost feature and it also has an effects loop, which means no loss in low, plus the boost can be programed to use the effects in the loop to function as the boost.

I already know about putting it in a loop and leaving them on all the time, that was my original intent but with a blender in there. The reason I waould like to try this is just as an experimentation thing as i wanted to try out both the pedals I stated anyways.

I have just had a greek pedal builder make me a true bypass strip with four loops with blend. He gave me the smallest price of all the pedal builders I asked for something similar, but I don't know if it's still cheap for you, as the euro is quite strong and you'll have to pay shipping too. It's pretty cool, even if there is a significant volume drop as the blend knob approaches the middle, but I turn my effects to their loudest so that I only have to turn the knob just a little towards the wet signal and keep almost all the dry signal coming through as well. If you want to contact him, his site is www.jampedals.com - tell him Panos sent you.

My recommendation would be to try the combination of both pedals to make sure you like it before you spend money on a looper to use them both together. In my experience that kind of combination will prove useless for anything except perhaps noise.

Loop-Master doesn't make anything you're looking for (they don't make blend circuits at all), so I'd suggest going with something inexpensive for blending like the Radial BigShot MIX or Barge Concepts VFB-2. It doesn't get any cheaper than that unless you build your own blend loop pedal.

But before you go buy ANY pedals, I'd like to give you some food for thought.

The ODB-3 has a built-in blend feature, and if you're getting a modded Tube Screamer that's adjusted with low end in mind, why would you need a blend loop pedal? Just a thought, really. If you want to simulate bi-amping, then it's a different story, but I don't really see low end loss being a real issue.

You could always get a really nice tube-screamer-based distortion pedal that's built for bass, like the Fulltone Bassdrive. In fact, I'd personally rather get a Fulltone Bassdrive instead of those two pedals. Plus, it'd cost you less than buying the three pedals you were looking at.

Well I already have the tonebender but I'll definately keep the Fulltone in mind, I've heard great stuff about their products.
