Trying to find that perfect OD.

I've always liked over-drive on bass, but never been able to find "my" sound. I started off with a Zoom B2.1u a few years ago, but didn't really know how to use it. This was running into my Hartke 3500A. A year or two later that got replaced with a SansAmp Programmable BDDI, a great pedal that was a lot easier for me to learn on than the Zoom and I was able to get some pretty nice tones out of it. Eventually wanting more, I bought a Pork Loin on a whim after reading positive things about it here. I wanted to love it, I really did, but I had a lot of trouble really digging it. It was just a bit too subtle and not aggressive enough for me.

Today, I bought an Aguilar Agro home from the shop. I think this is it. I've only used it through my SansAmp and into my computer, but it is tough as nails. I can't wait to try it at band tomorrow into my SVT3-PRO. I feel like the SansAmp will come off my board very soon, it was great with the Hartke and I'll hang onto it for gigs I have to fly to (save brining my whole pedal board and head) but it seems irreverent with the Ampeg. The Pork Loin may stay or may go, it will depend on if I find it useful to have the lower gain and warmer sound of that and then the Agro on tap also. All I can say now is that right now the Agro feels like it. It feels like what I've been waiting for.

My God Man, I think this search is going to drive me nuts! I have and have had some pedals that get super rave reviews, I like them but they are not IT for me. Then I trade, 2 trades later I wish I had what I had before but I decide to push onward. I have a B3K, it is super awesome, yet I am still wanting something a bit different. I have a Dave Hall Amplification VT2-EQ STD being built for me right now. I also have an Ampeg SVT3Pro as well as an Eden WT-400. I really like my Ampeg with a ton of gain as my cleaner sound. At this point I am wondering if I should run the Ampeg totally clean and let pedals do all of the work. I feel like I have to be coming to the end of this quest soon. My band mates can't believe the amount of trading that I do.

Good luck with the Agro. I loved it for a bit (and still want to love its aggressive nature, that's why I've kept it despite it losing it's place on my board), but I found it to actually strip some low end from my tone, no matter what I tried. In addition, for me there seems to be a high end "sizzle" that is always present no matter how much presence is dialed into the pedal. Maybe you'll have more luck with it.

I was also left with the same feeling of "meh" about the Pork Loin. I read so much good, and could never find a great place for it for me. It seemed to lack any interesting tonal character, and was completely swept up in a mix (IME). It didn't seem to compliment my style, or the band's sound in any fascinating way.

What I have kept, however, through multiple versions of trying to find the "perfect OD", is my Zvex Distortron. Nothing sounds as good as it does to me. It gives me a little extra bottom end oomph, it's got a great grind when playing with a pick and some rounds, and a nice wooly tone with fingers. If you crap out on the Agro, I'd suggest looking into one of those. It was my first dirt pedal purchase, and all of my other purchases are compared to the Distortron.

And they all seem to fail for my tastes.....
