Trying to get a specific heavier tone....

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, a few months ago I stepped up from a dumpy starter pack 4 string to a nice 6 string Ibanez SR506. One thing I've really been trying for is a specific heavy, snarly tone that I hear in a lot of bands with more prominent bass presence. I have a Boss ODB-3, going into a Line 6 Toneport with the bass pack expansion, so I have around 22 bass amp/cabs to experiment with (and have done so for a while). This combo seems to get me part of the way there, but I feel like I'm missing something, possibly in the EQ department.

There's a cleaner sound that you'll hear below in bands like Ruins, and a more distorted sound from the other bands. Here's some examples of what I mean:

Ruins:

Behold the Arctopus (Warr guitar, not bass, but the bass SIDE of the Warr has an amazing tone):

Dysrhythmia:

Taras Bul'ba:

...and there's many others with similar sounds, but these sort of epitomize the sound I'm after. I've tried multi-amping, tweaking the distorted/clean signal ratio, boosting mids in my eq to try to get that stringy sound, tried the modelled Sansamp pedal in the Line 6 Gearbox software, but for the most part I'm just getting a bassy low end combined with a sort of raspy overdriven high end instead of that throaty, stringy mid sound (or at least it sounds mid-y to me). My ODB-3 settings are usually level at 12, treble/bass boost at about 1, wet/dry at about 8 or 9, gain at about 10.

Has anyone managed this kind of sound and has eq settings/amp setup/pedal suggestions? The clean bass sounds pretty good, I'm using stock gauge strings, would a lighter thickness lend itself toward this sound? My bass is 34 inch scale and is using standard 6 string tuning (BEADGC). I usually play with a pick for this sound.

I've tried my pickup selector closer to the bridge and the neck and it seems like settling a bit closer to the bridge sounds a bit better. I'd like to keep my hardware as is if possible since this sound seems to be attainable via a variety of approaches (none of those bands use the same gear that I'm aware) but I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

Sorry if this is a bit wordy but I'd appreciate any tips you guys can offer...

Go all neck and split between two amps. One heavy low and mids (the amp with ballz), and one gritty with mids at half. You want "chunk"

Hmm, to properly try that I'll need to get a cable splitter to separate the pedal/clean signals and put them in separate inputs since I'm using the ODB externally. (I've been meaning to anyway, the Toneport has no external effects loop).

I tried it using the Toneport's distortion options but they're all either tone sucking guitar stompboxes or the overly limited version of a Sansamp bass overdrive that doesn't do the job. This is a good start though, going all neck helped more than I expected, I'm so ear fatigued that it's hard to know for sure though.

And now at least I have a word to describe what I'm looking for. Chunk!

Thanks!
