Trying to get a specific tone

This is the tone I've been trying to achieve now with a Geddy Lee Jazz, Little Mark II and an MXR M-80. I haven't even been able to come close. Is there something I'm missing? Would a compressor help bring out this kind of tone? Sorry I'm kind of new to effects such as compression. Anyways, enough of me talking, here's the youtube video:

How you play is going to influence your results much more than a compressor will.

Since we can only hear the example, and not how YOU sound, it's going to be very hard for any of us to help. I would suggest though (in this knowledge vacuum) that gear is probably not the answer.

To the contrary, you'll want a tubey distortion just sitting on the top if you are going for tone like that, or thats what I'm hearing anyway. (Sansamp Bass Driver :P)

I'll split the difference and say a combination of technique, and a tube driven overdrive might get you there.

The MXR isn't going to give you that kind of sound. You will need to get a natural overdrive sound like Ric and RyKnow said. I don't have enough experience to tell exactly which would be best, but I do have enough experience to tell the M80 isn't it.
