This link has a lot of info about compressors including some perspective on tube vs solid state.

I've tried three of the moderately priced tube comp pedals.

Maxon 660 Realtube; Liked how it sounded for the most part, good squeeze (if that's what you're after). But, while it was reasonably quiet by itself, it raised the noise level from other sources, namely other pedals in the chain.

Guyatone Flip Series tube comp; Had two of 'em, both sounded gorgeous, and were quiet. Guyatone made a purple bass-specific version, but it's really rare.

EHX Blackfinger; Tried two of them, both were pretty bad. Noisy, along with poor build quality IMO.
