Tuner nonsense

Sign in to disble this ad
This is kinda wacky---I just discovered the tuner in my BassPODXTLive is off (flat) by a few cents from my trusty Boss TU-12. Which is right? I think the Boss is, based on my trusty ears.
Maybe i should buy a Peterson or something---I guess. I dunno---all 2 cents welcome. I need to know I'm tuning to the damn correct pitch for cryin' out loud . . ..

The only "correct" tuning is the one shared by your bandmates. A few cents here or there don't matter as long as you all use the same tuner, or tuners that agree with each other.

i have a bean shaped podxt. there's a little parameter field in the tuner where you can change the cents. there's been PLENTY of times i hit the control knob while it was set to that field and didnt realize i had changed the tuning to 438 or whatever. so give that a look, make sure it's set up proper

i agree that when the bass is out of tune by one cent, it's not rly enough to make it sound out of tune. but it is enough to make the bass sound just bad.

I still think the 'Close enough for Rock 'n Roll' brackets are funny on the Pods. What are those for?

I'm going to disagree slightly - MOST of the time, being in tune with your bandmates will be good enough. For rehearsals and playing live it won't matter if you're all a few cents out in the same direction.

But for recording I'd recommend you make sure you're tuned "correctly" to A440. Believe me, it makes for a lot less hassle if you want to go back and put something else in later on.

JPB - hey, you were pretty close!

Sherman Oaks, eh? I saw a great band there a few years ago, I think it was 1994. Jack Sheldon's big band at a venue called the Moonlight Tango. Is that place still going?

Just looked it up, I believe it's called the Arlequin now, close to the corner of Ventura and Woodman.

Or whatever the keyboard is set to. Usually easier to tune a tuner than a keyboard.

An XTLive gets used here regularly and seems to be OK. Mom and sister helped give us perfect pitch as we got to hear classical being practiced 24/7 from birth until our teen years, part of the reason many rock bands always "sounded" out of tune(?) to us(because some were). Your comment has me concerned. I got my son the Peterson Strobe Stomp to use recently as he's a marching bassist in high school(and made region jazz band on bass!) so I can do a DIRECT compare.

I'll post results of my BODXTLive vs Peterson soon.

Our guitar player uses the Line 6 Vetta & tuner so I'll mention this to him Tuesday so we can also compare our Line 6 vs Line 6 for "issues". I'll put those results up too.

While this is true when you're playing live, rehearsing, etc., I do a lot of remote sessions now in my own studio, and am playing to tracks at all manner of stages of production--some done, some mere skeletons, etc. etc. and I must shoot for "perfect" tuning so at least I can say I'm tuned correctly no matter what the producer starts throwing into the track at a later stage!
(I have done sessions for hiphop artists where I had to tune to samples that were "in-between" proper pitches, which is always fun
Fortunately most of those guys now let me fix the offending sample if possible in Melodyne before I track bass, keys, whatever)
