Tuner Question

Mods: if this is in the wrong place please feel free to move the thread.

OK, so my nephew put a "pedal tuner" on his christmas list (he's a new bass player ). I don't want to break the bank, but I don't want a crap tuner for him either.

I currently use a Boss TU2 (and I love it), but $99 is a little higher than I want to spend, especially since I don't know if he's going to stick with playing long term.

I was looking online at the Behringer TU300, it's a fair price, and has had some decent reviews, but I thought I'd ask some guys/girls who actually play bass & have maybe tried this tuner, what do you guys think?

Is there a better alternative in the $30-50 range?

I've finally mastered the bass, does anyone know what those other 3 strings are for?

Get him a Pitchblack. Cheaper than the Boss and well worth the extra cash.

Pitchblack has a rebate going right now, if you combine it with one of the many 10% to 20% discounts from all the online retailers coming in daily, that $90 tuner can get as cheap as $62.

If he doesn't need a pedal, the Korg GA-30 is still the best tuner around as far as I'm concerned. $20 and works great.

I use a Ibanez LU 20. It's not True Bypass, but only about 40€ (~60$).
Works like a charm.

+1 on the PitchBlack.

Assuming your nephew doesn't have some sorta powerbrick or something... the PB will power up forever on a Duracell 9v battery. Plus they're easy to read and very accurate... and they look kewl too, so it'll earn you extra kewl Uncle points.

Although not a "pedal tuner", I have been using the Sabine STX1100 Chromatic AutoTuner For years now.

IME they work great. Never had a problem with them. I have two. One is probably around 15 years old and still going strong.

Plus, the price is hard to beat.

Modtone's new pedal tuner looks pretty solid and it's affordable.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

I actually went w/ the Pitchblack, and gave it to him yesterday......Epic Success!! He was so happy!

After dinner we opened it up & tried it out on one of my basses, worked great, then he showed me a new lesson he was working on...... For only playing 4 months or so, this kid has some chops....look out uncle...(I better go practice RIGHT NOW!)
