Tuner as Y-Splitter..?

Sign in to disble this ad
Advice please: schools of thought here on TB are often split between 'just use your ears' and scientific examinations of sound issues.

I've been using my TU-3 tuner as a Y-splitter for years now when recording my standard passive Precision Bass. I am a tone geek as much as anyone else (especially in the studio), and I listen closely for signal loss and/or degradation. So far I've heard none, and the TU-3 works fine to my ears as a way to send my signal down two paths.

So, I've got the 'use your ears' thing covered. Can anybody advise me of the sound-science end of this practice?

You might have to do an audio capture from each output port and do a comparison.

It's all about the impedance here... if the outputs are buffered (high input impedance, low output impedance) your signal doesn't get screwed up.. if the outputs are just wired in parallel (like the input straight to the bypass-jack and the tuner-circuit in parallel to that) your impedance gets different... that could cause problems...

Thanks for the input.

Any guidance regarding the specific path I'm talking about (Passive P through a TU-3) would be great.
