Two-knob comp pedal

Sign in to disble this ad
How many two-knob compressor pedals are there? I would love to have a compression pedal that only had two knobs: compression and gain. The compressors I've had in the past have been pretty full-featured - attack, release, knee control, threshold, etc. Ideally I could have a pedal with one big knob labeled "Compression", but I imagine you need some sort of level control in there.

What are some low-knob-count compressors that don't suck?

Seems like the vast majority of pedal comps have just two knobs, Comp and Level. Everyone has a different idea of "suckage", of course, but I would say:
Demeter
EBS
T-Rex CompNova
TC Vintage Comp
BBE OptoStomp
CAE V-Comp (good luck!)
Guyatone ST2 and BL2
Certain custom Orange Squeezer or Ross clones. (Quality, knob count, and bass-friendliness will vary depending on the customization.)

I guess there are more than I thought. How about one-knobs? Any one-knobbers out there?

(That Nano Soul Preacher looks pretty sweet.)

While some Orange Squeezer clones have only one knob, I wouldn't recommend it unless you are comfortable using an external gain stage (even the input gain of your amp's pre) to bring your signal levels back up post-compression.

When I would be using said compressor it would be an "always-on" unit that would sit on top of my cab next to my head (soon to be a Shuttle 6.0), so I could just adjust the gain at the front of the amp, as you said. I'm not one to switch a compressor in or out while I'm playing, so once I set it up it would probably be ok.

I bought (and just reviewed) the BBE OptoStomp and it is a good, simple comp, especially if you want to set it and forget it. I'm planning to do the very same thing.

Different strokes, I guess. I wouldn't be happy without the extra control on my comp, attack/release, gain/threshold, and of course compression, and output level.

After reading a few reviews, it seems like that might be the one for me. The price is certainly right! Maybe one will pop up in the classifieds soon...

At this point I'm trying to minimize the amount of knobs and tweaking in my rig. I've had compressors with all the controls I could ever want, and they just were more to deal with than I care to. Considering my live rig is very often bass -> amp, I didn't need all the bells and whistles on a unit I used occasionally. An affordable, good sounding comp that I can plug in and turn one knob is what I'm after at the moment.
