Use your bridge pickup. Turn up the mids on your amp to an almost honky level, then back off a bit to add some bass back in. Maybe a little compression to keep it smooth and level. |

The Robot Factory Pulse Synth will get pretty close but it will be a little rough around the edges - tracking a bass is a bit harder than generating tones from pressing a key. Mine tracks about as well as my Boss OC-2, but you have to play very cleanly if you want it to sound like a keyboard - no mute notes, no scruffy picking, etc.
The upcoming Octavius Squeezer will apparently be able do it, although nobody's got one yet, so tracking is currently an unknown quantity.
Er... And I think in hard-sync mode the Moogerfooger FreqBox should be able to do it too. But again I've never tried one so I couldn't tell you how reliable it is. |

After that you might want a clean blend to add in some weight, or a blend with a meaty octave down for more thump, a good filter or filters to shape the tone, a couple of modulation options, etc.. If you want portamento effects (v. common in the Parliament samples that the G-Funk sound used) apparently the Octavius Squeezer can do it, personally I just plug in my Stingray fretless. |
