Ok, I've searched but that didn't really answer my question. I'm looking to find an Akai Unibass. How much should I look to spend? What do they go for now? I can't seem to find any helpful info...

I just got one in the mail today from a fellow TBer.

Look up the price in the classifieds.

I didn't negotiate on the price, it's rare to find and I jumped on it 5 minutes after he posted it for sale. (Several others were interested, but I was first and the seller was fair, awesome guy, it didn't even bother him to send it to Europe.)

I'd say around 200€.

I saw them go on ebay from 100 to 400 €.

The one I got is in very good condition, no damage on the finish. Just the jacks are a bit loose. I can fix that.
Very good condition if I take in consideration how old it is.

edit: it's worth what you think it's worth to you... very different on rare items

The AKAI Deep Impact seems to go for much more money. I guess the Deep Impact is more in demand than the UniBass.

I was thinking people were going to say around £300 so I guess I could get away with spending less. I've got some cash set aside, I'm not entirely sure I'm going to like it but I don't expect I'll have any problems if I want to move it on.

I played around with it for 2 minutes during my lunch break.
(I'm at work, have my own business, live above my business.)

What I heard so far isn't that bad.
Without distortion it sound a lot like an EHX POG.

Going to receive an EHX HOG soon and I'm going to compare if the HOG can do what the UniBass does.

Distortion is actually really good from the UniBass.

Tonight I'll have enough time to play with it.

I've found one for sale at what I see as a reasonable price so I'm going go for it. It's a fair bit less than my £300 budget, still a bit steep but I think it's definitely worth it. I'll keep you all updated...

i paid £85 for a new one a few years back ((when they were still in production) - in the uk, the prices seem to go from about £100-150. Its a very good pedal, IMO - great tracking, personaly i didnt like the actual distortion tone itself, it did sound quite digital to me, but i was still happy to use it. Great for playing ramones and misfits songs with just you and a drummer.

Strange,

I'm very fond of the distortion. Does a good job at distorted guitar emulation.
I find the tracking to be a bit glitchy.

I love it though... I can fill the spectrum with metal bass (clean) and metal guitar (distortion) simultaniously.
Not as good as the real thing off course, but an awesome effect underneath my basslines.
The blending is sublime, my clean bass tone comes through without any tonesuck.

I recently bought one off a UK based bass forum for £50.
Oh baby where have you been all my life? It's perfect for the covers bands I'm in and for my original band too. I find the inbuilt disto a bit weak but I found it best to run it practically flat (only a little sizzle) through my Guv'nor MK1 and whoosh.

Yeah Rich, you beat me to it by minutes, literally. I've payed a fair bit more than £50.... I'm hoping it's going to be worth it though, it should arrive tomorrow.

I totally scooped there eh? It was sitting for about an hour with no interest then 3 or 4 of us all went for it at once.

I don't think you'll be disappointed. I'm totally blown away by how well it does what it does.

The only "problem" I have with it is, because I've chosen to use an off-board disto is what to do with the split signals. My amp only has 1 channel so for the moment I send both signals to my little Behringer mixer then into my LMII. I have a homemade A/B/Y pedal that could probably do the same job for live work. The other option obviously is to run 2 amps but I don't fancy lugging 2 rigs to gigs.

Another potential problem is how to tell our 2nd guitard he's been made redundant by this pedal.

Thankfully (do I mean that?) I won't have that problem, I play in a 3 piece...which is why I'm looking for a harmonizing distortion.

If I don't like it (or can't find a use for it) I'm hoping I'll get my money back . I've been wanting to try one for a while (I've had the money set aside) so jumped on one when it came up, it was a lot more than that one for £50 but I'm not too worried.

I'm pretty excited, it should arrive tomorrow .
