Unsing a Tech 21 Sansamp VT with other effects.

Hey gang. I plan to get a Sansamp VT sometime soon because I cannot afford any real ampeg gear and I like that old driven sound.

I gather I can use the pedal as a DI box onstage, which is cool but how would I combine it with other effects such as delay? I always place delay last in the chain, along with other modulation effects, not before the distortion source. So is it possible to DI the sansamp with other pedals after it before it hits the desk?

Go VT Bass -> Delay -> DI Box.

You can't strictly use the VT as a DI since it only has one output and it's not balanced. A proper DI box sends out a balanced signal which results in less noise, and it also gives you an extra unaffected output so you can use an on-stage amp as well as the PA. Any decent sound man should be able to provide a DI box on stage, but it's worth getting a decent one like a Radial JDI to keep handy in case you get landed with some crappy Behringer one!

FWIW, the little card that came packed with mine suggests putting the VT after dirt and before modulation for the best result, and/but also suggests trying it in different places in the chain and see what happens...

I can find no bad place to put it in the chain. Whether in front or behind, it's all good because the VT is the pedal of the future.

A DI box has a balanced XLR out. The Sansamp VT does not & you need a separate DI box to get the signal into the board.

Because of this, it's very easy to chain it with other pedals before or after the sansamp. In other words you put the DI box last in your chain & you're good to go no matter where the Sansamp VT is.
