Unusual ways to use a Whammy?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just got a Whammy from the Classifieds here, and it's fairly impressive... great tracking (IMO) and sounds reasonably organic (not artificial). If Digitech could add a second stomp switch (for 4 presets, instead of two) this pedal would be even better!!

I'm still trying to figure out if this pedal will be useful long-term. I'm wondering how other people use the Whammy, specifically if there are any "outside the box" ways to use this pedal.

So far, I think I could use some of the dissonant harmony effects as quick/basic embellishment. I can possibly use the Dive Bomb, if I can master it (I guess you don't step all the way down, but just float on the treadle lightly? It seems hard to find the sweet spot). And stepping halfway on some of the harmony presets (midway) gets some freaky sounds.

But I'm fishing for ideas, tips and secrets

Has to be the Whammy 4 with the divebomb, right? I've seen some people on youtube use the midi input on the Whammy for songs such as Map of the problematique, which i think is a very interesting way to achieve that sound! (G****r i know) You'd need software to programme it though. I think cubase, Guitar rig can both do this.
With the midi input and ability to programme a 'sequence' as such for the whammy effect, i think could be a very creative tool.

I used the whammy 4 while recording one of my old bands songs a long time ago. I used it with delay and played harmonics bending them up and down. I find it pairs best with delay, if you've got whammy and delay on, you've got yourself some cool sounds.

If you youtube tom morello one of if not the first link is him going through the sounds he makes. Obviously he plays guitar but it was interesting to an effects fan, he likes his whammy. I like to use mine like an octaver, not really unusual but eh.

I've loved my Whammy since the first time I heard Disposition.

I used to run the Dive Bomb setting on the Whammy IV into a Little Big Muff as the opening to one of our songs. I would press the pedal all the way down, strike the open E string repeatedly while at the same time raising the pedal a bit. This gave the effect of an engine starting. Once this intro was over I brought the pedal up slowly and it kind of gave the impression of a plane taking off. Sounded cool through my rig but through a full PA it sounds killer if you do it right.

i used to use the 2 octave step in conjunction with my micro pog to make loops that play under a few of our songs. good times. you can do some real funky stuff with the whammy and some other pedals.

whammy+octave/harmony+delay+chorus=absurd spacey whale call noises.

various combinations of hammer-on/whammy/slide can sound pretty interesting too. also- while i keep my whammy near the front of the chain (attached to ehx hog) for tracking reason- certain things- like synths i really like before it- so- something else to play around with.

It's great for pulsing synth lines. For that I'm eaither going Env filter >> WH4 or WH4 >> fuzz and using the +1/-1 harmony or -1 shift. Hold notes and rock it rhythmically like a wah.

It's a neat pedal that's fairly easy to get really oddball sounds out of. For weirder stuff I suggest utilizing the clean output and having the wet go through other pedals.

my guitarist uses a whammy, danelectro chorus, DS-1, DD3 and a crybaby. He's come up with some super crazy sounds...

(It's random, I know, I threw it together a while back for a thread where it made more contextual sense.)

Let me guess, JT is dancing because he just sold his bass whammy, bought a WH-4 and pocketed what looks like $187.

If that's the case, I gotta say - he sold low

The minor 3rd/major 3rd is fun for harmonizing with yourself.
