Upcoming Fuzz Shootout (now with clips and pics)

Sign in to disble this ad
So I've been on a little fuzz kick lately and I'm planning on doing a little shootout/review of some fuzz pedals that I have. I plan to post sound clips for each one also.

So here is what I have so far

1. Sovtek Muff (Black)
2. Keeley BD-2 with Freak Fuzz mod
3. Frantone Bassweet (V1)
4. Rick Gram Catch a Buzz
5. Boss DS-1 (stock)
6. Boss FZ-3 (stock)
7. MXR M-80 D.I.
8. Sovtek Muff (Green)
9. Earthbound Audio Supercollider
10. Earthbound Audio Beast
11. Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard

Stuff that's on its way or ordered

1. EHX Bass Big Muff
2. Mountainking Megalith
3. Cobrahawk B12

Some other pedals that I'm thinking about

1. Creepyfingers Pink Elelphant (Scrambler clone)
2. Creepyfingers Doomidrive (Univox Uni drive clone)
3. Earthbound Audio Centurion
4. Malekko B:Assmaster (double germ)
5. Devi Ever Shoegazer
6. Devi Ever Godzilla
7. Blackout Effects Musket Fuzz
8. Blackout Effects Fix'd Fuzz
9. Tortuga Yeti
10. Tortuga Wendingo
11. Mountainking Huge Box Omega
12. Ox Bass Fuzz
13. Way Huge Swollen Pickle

Ok here we go finally got around to getting some stuff together. For more info on some of these pedals check out bassfuzz.com grygrx does a really great job at samples and reviews.

1. Frantone Bassweet

Little purple box of doom. I can see why this pedal has caught on with the sludge/doom crowd. Massive amounts of low end, super compressed with no attack, huge amounts of sustain. This pedal helped 2 speakers in my YC 810 give up the ghost.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859142

2. Sanford & Sonny Bluebeard Fuzz

Don't let it's bland exterior fool you there is some anger ready to be unleashed in this. Basically a REALLY good muff clone.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859141

3. Earthbound Audio Supercollider

If you want a muff with some more flexibility and some great low end.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859138

4. Earthbound Audio Beast

Basically a Supercollider with 2 oscillation loops. Great if your into weird/ obnoxious/annoying/loud/ noises all while being a great fuzz.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859137

4. Keeley Freak Fuzz (Freak of the Week) modded BD-2

Pretty cool pedal capable of light OD to some fuzz.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859145

5. EHX/Sovtek Muff (Black)

It's a muff.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859147

6. EHX/Sovtek Muff (Green)

Regarded as one of the best muffs for bass.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859139

7. MXR Bass d.i. (M-80)

Swiss army effect for bass. Really handy to have on you just incase.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859144

8. Rick Gram Catch A Buzz

Gated "Buzz" effect that doesn't retain the lows.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859143

9. Boss DS-1 (stock)

Considered pretty useless by alot of people but I like it as a different flavor to the muff stuff. Cuts the lows.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859140

10. Boss FZ-3 (stock)

Overall a pretty bad pedal (to me anyway) I've heard that it's pretty simple to mod this into a Fuzz Face. I'll probably break out the soldering iron on this one.

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8859146

So that's what I got right now. All were recorded with an '87 Fender '62 Pbass reissue into an Apogee One into Garageband. No mixing/editing. I'll try to get some clips with an active bass up soon.

I love how the Centurion sounds on the guitar clips at Earthbound's myspace. Would love to hear it on bass.

Blackout Effectors Musket Fuzz, Fix'd Fuzz, or Twosome (both in one box). The Musket in particular sounds great.

Yep been pretty interested in the Centurion since I first saw it on the Earthbound blog. I totally forgot about the Musket and Fix'd Fuzz.

Please compare the fuzz circuit in the Pigtronix Disnortion, as those that want a fuzz to blend or have parallel to a drive would want to know if the OFO's fuzz is worth their time.

Yep been looking into the Shoegazer and the Godzilla too. Might check out the Stomp Under Foot Muff clones too.

I always wanted to hear the Cobrahawk B12 after seeing one on Troy Sanders pedalboard.

If you have a few pennies hiding in the sofa, how about demos of the Dirty Boy - Bass Bully and OnkartGromt - Grombass.

Hell yea... The AB-Synth is great on bass (it's now my main "heavy" fuzz) just make sure you get the "bass mod" if you order one, it sounds fine without it, but it just makes it that much more bass friendly.

Boss DS-1?

The Boss DS-1 is not anywhere close to a heavy fuzz, and without a clean blend is unusable for bass. It drops lows like crazy! It's just light distortion, almost an overdrive.

Zvex Mastotron is worth a look. It retains loads of bass and is pretty full-on ( I use it). One of the MXR ones maybe? Most of the Dwarfcraft fuzzes are supposed to retain bass well... what about the Shiva?

I know alot of people say it sucks but it's been on my board for 6 months and I know that some people would like to here how it sounds on bass so thats why I threw it in there. And also I wouldn't say that it is unusable for bass it's just not what alot of people on here would be into.

If price ain't an issue, a Dwarfcraft Eau Claire Thunder would be awesome.

Devi Ever VFM, for sure... one of my favorite Devi's.

If you're looking for something crazygonuts, I'd suggest a Red Panda Bitcrusher for the Line6 Tonecore docks... sure, it's a bitcrusher, but with the crush up, it gets into some nasty heavy fuzz territory. It's unapologetically digital, but a great example of interesting digital distortion (IMO, of course). Oooh - or a WMD Geiger Counter!

+1 - I'd actually want to hear this more than the Eau Claire Thunder. I already know that the ECT is awesome. I think we all need more info on the Robot Devil.
