| Upgrading from a B-DEC

My son has been using the Fender B-DEC as a practice amp since he started playing. We are now switching to a new amp and will miss the effects and sounds on the B-DEC.
I'd like to buy a multi-effect unit. It needs to do this:
1) Simulate the sounds of different amps/cabs very well. (This is our number one application - change the sound of the bass to suit different types of music, so a jazz line sounds different from reggae)
2) Have some basic distortion and similar effects.
3) Have a true bypass in case we just want the sound of the original bass.
There are two units we can get a good deal on: Boss GT-6B and Line 6 Bass Pod XT Live. We are willing to consider other units too. We are completely new to the world of effects.
Any advice is appreciated.
