Using an Aguilar AGRO and Tone-Hammer together?

Hey Guys,

I just picked up an Aguilar AGRO overdrive pedal and wanted to know if anyone was using it in tandem with an Aguilar Tone-Hammer. I really like the overdrive tones out of the AGRO, but don't like the fact that it seems to lose some "bottom" when engaged.

I use the AGS feature of the Tone-Hammer currently and get some "hair" on the notes while retaining the low end. Wanted to see if you guys have used the Tone-Hammer (without the AGS engaged) with the AGRO to offer the same sort of effect while retaining "bottom".

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm curious to know how the combo works for you.. I have an Agro on the way, was going to get the TH but wanted some distortion over OD. Should be here Friday.

I am a Tone Hammer user as well - AGS always engaged - I love my Tone Hammer!

On the other hand, I personally found that to just be the nature of the Agro (some low-end loss). The Agro didn't work out for me for that reason. There's really no way to compensate for that (IME), minus stacking another pedal with it (such as an EQ).

Additionally, the AGS is not really designed for a kick on type of OD - the level change is too drastic. With the AGS, you set it and leave it - and that's your tone. If you are looking for an additional gain stage with some more bottom-end oomph, you might be better served searching elsewhere.

Is it the same with the rack mounted AGRO? I've seen one in a local pawn shop for over two years now, but they won't lower the price below $199.

No experience with the rack mount, but I would guess that they are quite different, as it appears the rack mount has a 3 band EQ that is not present on the pedal. The ability to cut some of the highs and push some of the lows I think would make a huge difference.

I run both pedals and I agree the AGRO loses a little bit of bottom end, but from playing live it doesn't seem to be a big deal. Especially in larger venues, sound guys comment that the bass distortion cuts through a lot better than what we bassists usually hear on stage, which is more bottom end. I'm always surprised how much different my bass sounds from 25 feet out. It sounds great, but doesn't rattle you the same way the lows do standing in front of your amp.

Taking it to an extreme, I had a JHS low drive before and HATED the sound. If the AGRO diminishes low end, the JHS slashes it! However, a sound guy who is a bassist himself said that the distortion sounded great. It cut through the mix so it made each note stand out.

+1 on the AGS sounding great. If only the DB was the same as unaffected. But I have to say I am happy with my AGRO.
