VFE White Horse compressor - Microthumpinator-like function?

Hi all,

Following a search of past threads, which were helpful but didn't answer my question, I'm now posting this with regards to the question in title.

Some background: At the moment I'm using a SFX Microthumpinator (HP filter) in front of an FEA Optifet compressor as the first part of my signal chain (after bass), and am very happy with the sound. However, it would be easier to have the filter and compressor combined in the one pedal...less to carry etc...

Lately I've been looking into the VFE White Horse comp and found the following on their website at http://www.vfepedals.com/white-horse.html:

'The BASS control is a very simple passive high pass filter placed just before the compressor/drive stage. The cutoff frequency ranges from about 720Hz all the way down below 20Hz. This does not affect the dry signal path, just the compressor/drive signal path. When adding drive, it's often a good idea to cut pre-gain bass to keep the bottom end tight & punchy.'

Since the VFE has a blend function (presumably) allowing for a 100% compressed signal, I'm thinking this could be a one-pedal filter/compressor worth considering. Anyone with experience or thoughts on this pedal, particularly this useage?

Note, my other consideration is that the VFE (or any other comp) would have to be VERY good to warrant replacing the Optifet. Most comments on TB seem to indicate the VFE is an excellent comp and is well-suited to bass, and Ovnilab gives a very favourable review....so any further thoughts on this also welcome!

Best wishes

The two filters are totally different, achieving totally different results. The purpose of the VFE filter is to reduce mud or flab in the low end, with a shallow slope; the purpose of the [sfx] filter is to cut subharmonic content, with a very steep slope. Neither does what the other does. Both are valid and useful, depending on individual cases.

Exar's business is on hold for now. I will still help previous customers.
