Sign in to disble this ad
HI EVERYONE!!! I've been listening to all kinds of 70's stuff lately ..........I have been noticing a sort of common effect for the day...........It you are familiar with some old Pat Travers (a good example) With Mars Cowling on bass..........he liked to use a modulating effect but I can;t decifer if it's flange, phase or something of the like I'm not familiar with....can anyone help me out???????? Maybe with a type and model ....... others used this as well (bassist for Tommy Bolin Band) and others I;m drawing a blank with right now

for bass?? Usually nothing. A bit of overdrive to simulate the amps...

Thinking on it, the only tunes that came outta the '70s with noteworthy fx were...

Stranglehold (nugent) - Phase shifter
Love of money (the oJays) Flanger (I think!)
One of these days (Pink Floyd) Echo.

And Jaco used some primitive chorus / distortion...

The '70s was all about *guitar*. A fine reason to avoid the '70s, if you ask me.

I think it's a Phaser you're thinking of. Can't go wrong with a MXR Phase 90.

It could be an ADA Flanger, the Travers band were all big endorsers back in the day.

I think I hear some subtle flange on a couple of those songs. I'd guess flanger, personally.

IME modulation effects on guitars and keys can sometimes make the bass sound like it's effected as well and I think this is happening somewhat on Is This Love.

Wasn't OoTD done with delay, not Echo? I've seen the settings for replicating it, but maybe somebody just figured out settings that would replicate an Echo box...

ETA: I saw there's some controversy as to whether echo and delay are different effects, so, I'm not trying to open a can of worms on this, just was under the impression that a delay was used.

One of the days was done with the Binson Echorec. Echo and delay are the same effect. Not sure what argument would say they are different.

That second tune is a subtle flanger and a little bit of tube overdrive.

The first one I couldn't really hear any effects, and had to stop listening because the cover version made me be sick in my mouth.

Lots and lots of compression can be noticed in this tone, likely coming from a pushed tube amp.
