What is this bass wizardry?

Skrillex - Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites (Live Dubstep Cover by Pinn Panelle) - YouTube

I just saw this video the other day and was wonder what the device the bass player is using is. He starts using it 56 seconds in if anyone is unsure.

Looks like an ebow's blue light of doom forged in to some kind of magical ring.

If anyone knows what it is and how it works i would love to know i am very curious.

Cheers.

Source Audio HotHand MIDI from what the guys at Source Audio have said. Note there's a bass line under the massive distorted high synth you're hearing. You have a guitar player, synth player, and laptops everywhere. Makes it hard to tell exactly who's doing what sometimes.

I know what you mean there's so much tech there I really had no idea what was going on but really wanted to know what he was using.

I'm pretty confident the bass is NOT doing the truly badass distorted part but is instead doing a slightly less audible bass line underneath. But I could be mistaken.

More interesting is the calculator the guitar player appears to be using as a controller, probably MIDI controlling Ableton on a laptop which is giving the distorted higher voice during the HotHand part.

It appeared to be the Soundblox Pro Envelope Filter used in conjunction with the Hot Hand + a pretty heavy fuzz!

Everyone keeps asking the same question, and it's been answered! The bass player is using a pedal from Source Audio called the envelope filter pro, this pedal utilizes Source Audio's hot hand technology. It's a motion sensor ring with a small RF receiver that plugs into the pedal to control different parameters.

Yes.

And I think it's likely that the bass signal could be split sub vs. dirty filter.

But pleaze, get rid of that cheese-dick flute sounding keyboard!

Ugggggh!

What I'm saying is listen to the track. You can hear a bass tone underneath the distorted, higher pitched tone. I'm guessing the guitar player is playing that higher pitched tone as opposed to the bass player doing it all.

Not that it's impossible he's doing it all with dual signal paths. Just that I doubt he is. I'm certainly not throwing a downer on them, they're TOTALLY awesome and seriously inspiring in every possible way. Including the "cheeze-dick flute sounding keyboard". Though the keys sound isn't quite a good as the original, the whole package is totally killer.

I think his comment on this Facebook page confirms what I'm saying.

Also, the guitarist is using a Bluetooth device for control: pinnpanelle's Channel - YouTube

Great stuff!

What about this video? I'm extremely skeptical about the extremely accurate reproduction of a synthesized dubstep wobble on a regular bass.

Use good headphones to hear the 'sub'-bassline.
