what is the best compressor in your mind?

i'm looking to replace my crappy behringer stomp box. i've been considering the bass v-amp pro since it has comp and a gate along with more wffects that i'd ever want to use. so lets here some opinions in the under $200 range.

I'm impressed by the Demeter Compulator, and its probably the standard in stomp box compressors. I've heard good things about the Aguilar TLC, the Mark Bass Compresseur, and the Keely. I had an EBS and it did a nice job too.

Check out this link. It's from the signature of fellow TBer Bongomania, he's pretty much the authority on compression around here.

As for myself, I've used an EBS Multo Comp for a while, but went back to a Boss CS-3. Does it for me, depends on what you want in a compressor.

Happy reading !

I've tried at least a few, but nowhere near bongo's obsession, and I really like the EBS Multicomp. Take some time and read Bongo's reviews linked above and take his advice. He knows what he's talking about. Short cutting will only result in more money spent later.

I really like the two I use. Aguilar TLC for transparent compression, and maxon cp9pro+ for added punch.

+1 on the Compulator. I thought it was an awesome compressor when I had one.

i'll go through the reviews. i'm pretty sure my behringer is the same as your boss cs-3 seeing as they got sued by boss when they made them.

Stompbox-wise I'd say I didn't try many and those I tried/had I didn't like.

Still got to see a unit to beat the (rackmount) dbx 160A. A bit pricey, but oh God, it just works!!

There is no "best". Only "favorites".

If you ask for favorites you'll get fifty different answers.

Just avoid the ones with known noise issues, there are several.

The rest are a matter of taste and what works for you, in your musical situation(s).

Just because Behringer was sued for copying the Boss does *not* mean the Behringer is the same. Sure, they make copies, but they make cheap, low quality copies. Nothing more, IMO.

I use a dbx 166xl that I am pretty fond of.

IMO if you want something decent, don't buy Behringer. I did recommend them to a student recently, he's 14 and never owned effects pedals. I told him they're entry level units and cheap, so for those two reasons would be good for him to start out on to learn what different effects sound like. Then get the real deal down the track.

Re: what is the best compressor in your mind?

I don't use a compressor in my mind. I've found that it works much better if I stick it on a pedal board, and use it on the floor...

I have been very happy with the tc nova dynamics, it's the most natural sounding compressor I've ever used.

+1 - and I'll add that brain salad surgery can help alleviate that condition.

I wish I had a compressor in my mind…to avoid spiking thoughts.
Anyway, I love the Markbass Compressore.

Diamond Bass Comp with 24v power supply is great, if you want something a bit more subtle the Demeter Compulator is also pretty good.

Stay the heck away from the V-Amp. I had one for a while and it is absolute garbage.

If you are OK with using a rack-mounted compressor, keep an eye out for the Symetrix 501. They are discontinued, so you'll have to look for a used one, but they sound killer. If you are at the right place at the right time, you might find one for pretty cheap. I got mine for $75.

I've had a few too, and I've been most fond of the Markbass Compressore I have now.
