"Best" and "most versatile" are pretty much mutually exclusive. And first you have to answer "The best at what?"

If you mean to cover a wide range of fundamentally different tones, in say a versatile covers band, then I would suggest a large multi-fx unit.

We really need more info to give you a better answer. What genre's, what tones are you looking for, vintage and modern? Funk and rock? Special fx?

Are you after a multi FX unit that has all different types of effects, or are you after one particular type?

You need a Pigtronix Mothership. Perfect for any application of bass.

I was thinking about suggesting the Akai Deep Impact or the Human Gear Animato.

Nah! The most versatile effect is a volume pedal.

As far as hard rock sounds. Do a search for "overdrive", "distortion", "Bass Driver", and "VT Bass".

Try to be a little more specific. Give us some soundclips/youtube links to the tone you're after so we can tell you to use the search function some more... I mean... try to help you.

It should have a blue LED, they always work better than red ones.

pedals are all verstatile, they are so versatile that when you get tired of the one you have you can just swap it out for a different one. It only requires cash.

I detect a hint of sarcasm....

Both are equally the best at being expensive...
