what compressor do i want?

Sign in to disble this ad
i want to even out my tapping sound a bit, so am i looking for a subtle soft compressor or a hard squashy kind?
also, i dont want to spend more than 100$ or so
so i was looking at BBE opto stomp but then i found these options too
1 MXR M-102 Dyna Comp Compressor Pedal
2 MXR M-132 Super Comp Compressor Pedal (whats the difference between these two mxr's)
3 Modtone Lemon Squeeze Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal

am still leaning towards the bbe because of the its reviews but i'd like to find out if it is what i want?

Out of those I would go with the BBE. I have no idea what the Lemon Squeeze is, but the MXRs will suck the bass right out of your bass.

I haven't tried any with exception to the Super Comp and I can promise that you DO NOT want that one. Not good at all. Tone loss and the one I had would distort very easily.

With that being said, I've read a LOT about compressors (www.ovnilab.com). I've narrowed down my choice to the Aguilar TLC. But, if you're not wanting to spend more than about $100, the BBE seems to be a great choice - both from what everyone has said about them and the fact that they can be had for a little more than $60 bucks on Amazon. I've been really tempted to try one out but I'm pretty set on the TLC.

Out of those choices, I'd go with the BBE Opto Stomp. If you wanted to save up a little more, you could get a used Demeter Compulator for less than $150.

That's fellow TB-er Bongomania's site and a comprehensive bass compressor catalog. Apparently, you'll find pretty trustworthy reviews there.

I have the BBE and it works great. I run the Vol about 7 1/2 and Comp between 3 and 4. a little goes a lng way. however, I find I don't use it much now because compressors don't allow you to play with dynamics since it sounds the same if you pluck lightly or heavy thus not letting you adjust your dynamic volume with your fingers. There are many uses for them though and I would go with the BBE out of those for sure. You won't be dissapointed.

Only over-compression causes you to sound the same whether plucking lightly or heavily. if that's your experience of it, you have it set too strong, or are sending too hot of a signal into it.

I've been using the EBS Multi-Comp foot pedal. Adds some nice punch to the bass. I can't compare it to the other recommendations but it works for me.

I'd think either the BBE or Punch Factory would do the trick - I've owned and liked both.

BBE. I go back and forth on compression, but when I use it, I use the BBE. It's pretty "transparent" and not squishy at all. That's why I go back and forth. Even when it's on I barely know.

I want a compressor that I can apply only to the top end and not the bottom. So something with a crossover is the ticket for me. A comp on the whole rig really digs into the dynamics of the overall tone and I certainly do not want that.

Bongomania FAQs are great. Thank you. after reading them though, I have a question. I am looking to add a compressor through the effects loop of my Shuttle 6.0. I don't really want a rack unit. Are there any pedal types that run a line level rather than instrument level?
Thanks.
