Why not top mounted jacks? This is the most practical design by far.
So... why not?

I prefer top mounted but it's not a deal breaker, by any means.

I would have LOVED to see two footswitches with separate gain knobs, though.

Yes, a design from Doug! He spent some serious time researching vintage amps (hence the name Vintage Microtubes I'm sure) and this one's meant to go after old school Rush, The Who and Yes type stuff.

You know for some reason I think this will be a fuzz pedal, remember Doug has mention that he is going to make a fuzz pedal based on old circuit?

I wonder if the era knob is more like a sansamp character knob or a low pass filter.

Not based on an SVT. The Era control is a tone control but it's more than just a simple low pass.

It would have had to be in a much larger box for that - we wanted to keep it compact.

It does a lot more... since it's meant to unlock different tones throughout rock and roll history, it does much more than changing the frequency response (like any other EQ or Tone stack).
It interacts beautifully with the Drive knob to recreate the effects that other factors like recording techniques had over the sound, such as different types of harmonics and even compression levels!

No space for that in a little box!

MUST HAVE SOUNDCLIPS! The way you guys are describing this thing, it's sounding more and more like my holy grail OD.
