Really digging the bass distortion in this song, most easily heard in the first 10 seconds of the clip. Slices through the guitar, yet super saturated, dense, woody, mid-heavy and buzzsaw like with a raspy articulation. It kind of sounds like what a B:assmaster could provide. I'm sure the bass and EQ settings play a part, but the distortion istself stands out to me. Any ideas?

Never got one to sound like that before, although I've only used the Russian version. Could be the quality of clip messing with my ears.

Judging from the youtube clip you've posted, that sound could be achieved with the big muff played through an ampeg amp. if it helps, try using the big muff with a tech 21 vt bass pedal. if that doesn't help, visit bassfuzz.com. this website has a lot of fuzz pedals tested out on bass.

Hmmm.... to me it sounds more like a Boss ODB-3 plus that heavily overdriven Ampeg.

Really?...I would of thought it would be a big muff because the bass player in that band has that cliff burton sound. I Suppose you're right. that sound can be achieved with a boss odb-3...or a boss od-20.

With the right setting I've come close to that with an ODB-3, but the fuzz seems a tad more intense and woolly than what that pedal can produce. Given that the clip is from 1993 and there weren't many bass fuzz option around at the time I'm guessing it probably is any ol' big muff + cranked tube amp. Although Paul Erickson is a total tone freak in his current band Vaz, so it could be something homemade.

True...there weren't many bass effects options in 1993. other than that, try combining the tech 21 vt bass with either the boss odb-3 or the boss od-20. the vt bass can duplicate any tube amp sounds.
