What do I need to get this tone?

I'm looking for a pedal which will give me something that sounds like this tone ("Bliss" by Muse): http://media.putfile.com/Muse---Bliss-45.
Is it an overdrive? Fuzz? Synth? Something else? I realise it's blended with a lot of dry signal, but I'm looking for something which will give me that slightly grindy tone, which would sit well in a band mix. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a Fuzz, you could try a Prunes and Custard Fuzz pedal. Im pretty sure thats the same effect as Hysteria. Good luck on the quest.

Chris Wolstenholme uses an EHX Big Muff Pi and a boss OD pedal for his distortion/fuzz if i recall correctly.

I'd recommend doing a search on him. there's been a few about him, biamping, deep impacts, big muffs and more- good luck in your quest.

Yeah I've been through a heap of Chris Wolstenholme threads and am aware of his obscure Japanese distortions, Deep Impacts, x number of Big Muffs used to get that hysteria sound, etc... I'm not really worried about getting exactly the pedals he uses, I just want some TB'ers opinions on what can produce something that sounds like the tone in that clip I posted, and isn't wildly obscure and won't cost me an arm and a leg... Thanks for your help anyway

cool. I'd look into the crowther prunes and custard. from everything I've heard here it does a pretty good immitation of the deep impact sound.

Also check the Ibanez SB-7 as it does a good imitation of the Prunes and Custard.

I need to do some sound clips of this new subdecay prototype I've got it's pretty musey and synthy

I seem to recall quite a few really good tones emulating that song on the bass pod xt. They were in the custom sounds portion of their website and you could download them. Sounded pretty damn convincing
