What do you recommend

hey, I have recently made the switch from guitar to bass so I could play in a band that we started at school. Our song range is from sublime/ old crow medicine show/ the band/ zeppelin/ blink182 ect. We are going to start playing a lot of funk to now. So i guess im asking what pedals do you recommend i get that can cover a large range of songs. Im very inexperienced on this stuff. I am also willing to spend money because of how much attention we have gotten/ gigs we are lined up for next year (college parties/tailgates). An amp recommendation would be appreciated to. We will play both indoors as well as out doors if that helps at all.
thanks a lot

first off, without knowing what gear you already have or what tones you have, i'd suggest:

Tech 21 VTbass - its a pre-amp and an amp/cab simulator. I really love mine and many find it a great addition to their existing setup. Its basically designed to sound like Ampeg's amps but can go further, the built in cab sim (which you can turn off on the new models) is really great if you get DI'd at gigs and intend on using fuzz/distortion (fuzz though a DI box always sounded awful to me until I used the VT Bass).

Fuzz pedals are VERY popular on this forum and there is a wide range to choose from but dont know if it really fits in with the type of music you've listed. The VTBass does overdrive but you may want to consider a separate overdrive.

if you mean funk as in Parliament/Funadelic/Bootsy Collins then you might want to invest in an envelope filter or autowah - take a look at the electro-harmonix Q-tron Range, the Bass Balls and the Enigma to get you started.

Also you may want to consider an bass eq pedal for those times you want to cut the high end to get more of a smoother, rounder sound for the sublime/zep sounds.

As for amps, id say that a classic suggestion would be: Ampeg SVT (300w All tube) with its 8x10 cab, but you could do whatever really. I'd say if you're looking for solid state then MINIMUM 300w considering you'll be playing outside. Tube amps almost always sound alot louder than their SS counterparts so keep that in mind. Personally I think you cant go far wrong with a Markbass Little Mark II/III (500w @ 4ohms) and some decent cabs.

thanks for the reply, ill look into what you recommended to see if thats the sound im looking for. As for what kind of funk parliament/ George clinton/ boosty, rick james, stevie wonder, curtis mayfield, michael jackon, the commodores, kool and the gang things like that. We were also talking of doing some jam/heady stuff (not what i want to do personally)

As of now i have an sx bass and an old peavey head and cab.

I played bass for 15 years before "needing" any pedals, thanks to TB. Now I've got a bunch of pedals. I have fun playing with them but the only one I'd really miss is reverb for my EUB.

So long as you have active EQ on your bass the rest is window dressing. I'd spend money on a nice bass way before any pedals. Most of your tone comes from your fingers and you should learn to get that out before seasoning with pedals imho.
