What does a compression pedal do and do you need one in addition to the amp control

I did a quick search and didnt' see anything, although this is a pretty basic questions. I am a full blown newbee to pedals. I have never played with a single one, and I am looking around. What exactly does a compression pedal do, and does a bassist really need one in addition to the compression control on the amp? I'm wondering if this would be something I need/want. Thanks!

Let us know if you have any more specific questions and we can try to help. bongomania (who wrote that FAQ) is a great resource on all things compressor.
