He doesn't use effects - his grit comes from driving either his Ampeg or Hiwatt head. As luck would have it, there's a German/Germanic hipster comparing the same amps O'Malley uses:

If you wanna copy the Ampeg you can use a Tech21 VT Bass or Catalinbread SFT. I don't know one that'll copy the Hiwatt.
