What effect is this?/Is this an effect?

I've been really into this band for a couple months now, and I really like the bass tone. I've been trying to emulate it but can't do it to save my life.

Listen to "Cold," there's a part where it's just bass and drums (2/3-3/4 of the way through), that should give you a better idea of the tone.

Can anyone help me out? Is he using some kind of an effect or do I just need to play with my EQ more?

So wait, you're talking about the two measures that start around 2:30? I'd say it's a graphic EQ with some extreme settings.

I'd also say "I effing hate waiting for stupid Myspace pages to load", but that would be a grumpy old man thing to say.

Typical metal tone. A lot of lows and highs, few mediums and a huge compression that usually comes from a pushed tube head.
