What effects should I get for this sound...?

Sign in to disble this ad
I play alt rock that has some driving slap parts...but the slap dissapears in the mix often...want a pedal that will bring it back and give it a serious presence.
Also some songs I am looking for a really light sound for intro's (low on bass)...and just need something to switch from a light tinny sound to my regular cab sound.
I guess more desires will come up in the future...should I just get an effects board rather than finding individual pedals? Like the Boss, or the Roland V-Bass???
Sorry, complete newbie to effects...been playing bass for 12 years and never used any effects.

A compressor will bring out more of your slap tones for sure... there are a million options, but something simple will do... or... you can buy a stomp style pre-amp (Sansamp Bass Driver or MXR-M80+), I find they compress the tone a bit, plus you can EQ it to be more slap-friendly, also you can add a bit of overdrive (also in those same pedals) to help cut through.

for the slap i recommend an EQ pedal. Scoop out them mids and boost that treble for your slap happyness.

For the volume situation, get a Volume pedal. Try Ernie Ball.

+1 eq

i use the mxr 10band- aside from the 18v power supply- its perfect. the picture is of my pedal/preamp eq settings. mind you i also run a rack compressor- but with the eq pedal off- fingerstyle sounds great- slap sounds dead and dull- with it on- its got that punch and trebley bite.

also- the mxr eq has a both volume and gain sliders- so that might work in lieu of a dedicated volume pedal. i personally would not enjoy monitoring my playing with a volume pedal.
