What effects would you recommend I take a look at?

Sign in to disble this ad
Im buying a Spector(I think) and Ill have about 4 or 5 hundred dollars to spend and I was curious what pedals you all thought were cool and I should take a look at! I play metal and rock(pick and no pick and a LITTLE slap) and I got a GK GLX 410 and a GK400rb old head, thought Id tell you incase it made a difference.

PS-Ive already got a Boss chorus that I like so I dont need one of those.
Im open to anything you guys think might be cool cause Im new to effects and Im willing to check out anything, but theres so many effects I thought it would be wise to get some opinions on whats cool out there!
Thanks alot!

Hey man,
welcome aboard. I'd recommend reading through as many pages here as you can. the post your pedalboard threads are a good place for seeing where many other bassists around these parts are at and has some fantastic looking boards. Also look for fuzzes, overdrives, octavers, filters... the list can seem endless at first but you'll get an idea first There are quite a few clips floating around here so that'll give you an idea. For compressors I'd recommend trawling through Bongomania's reviewpage, it's an excellent starting point.

We should write a newbie's guide to individual pedal buying. There are some decent (and even great) choices on the cheap in each of the primary effect types.

If I were building a friend a 'starter kit', it would probably look something like this. Choices made to maximize the cost/benefit of pedals. Trying to keep the average used cost per pedal around $50, and not including anything that is hard to find:

Fuzz: EHX - Little Big Muff
OD Dist: DOD 250/Digitech Bad Monkey
Envelope Filter: FX25B
Chorus: Danelctro - Cool Cat
Phaser: MXR Phase90
Flanger: Boss BF2/3
Delay: Boss DD-3
Octave: EHX Micro Pog
Compressor: Aphex Punch Factory.

IMHO a basic pedal set up to start with would be:

fuzz/distortion of some type
wah (auto or foot), could be an envelope instead
Octave pedal

3 basic pedals that can function in just about any setting IMO. After that it is experimenting and finding what you like and what works in a band.

Nope, just didn't pop into my head when I was thinking about it. Probably an equal (but different) choice. Which ever one was cheaper on e-bay that day

I think an OD/Fuzz pedal for sure.

Others to look at would be: envelope filter and/or wah/auto wah, flanger, phaser, octave, delay, synth etc.

Good luck! I must warn you though, pedals can be quite addictive!

the first pedal I would suggest buying is a tuner. Boss Tu-2 and a Korg one (cant remember which one) are both great choices.

After that I'd get a DI read: sansamp programmable DI (PBDDI). It has saved my life on at least once occasion, you can program it for different basses/eq styles you would want and set up an overdrive channel.

You say you have a chorus - with those three after that you venture into envelope filter territory - a wah/flanger/phaser. A Dunlop 105q Bass wah would be a great start.

Hope this helps!

p.s. it took me several hundred dollars of pedal-go-round to figure this setup out (it is what I have, along with some other stuff)

The basis of my pedalboard is a Trace Elliot SMX dual band compressor pedal. A close second is a mid-nineties DOD FX25. Great envelope with fast attack for slap. After that is a Digitech Bass Synth Wah, followed by a Boss ME20B. The ME20B is fairly new and doesn't have a lot of feedback on TB yet, but let me tell you it's great. All the effects you need, none of the ones you don't and it's easier to use than any multi-effect I've come across. My two cents.

Listen to grygrx, great point about the newb's guide to pedals. PM the mods and see if you can get a new thread stickied about it.

Great idea!
Ive had alot of confusion with pedals cause Ive just started messing with them over the past month or so and Ive been overwhelmed with all the choices lol.
Especially how to set up the chain haha.

If you're not sure about effects why not get hold of a cheap multifx pedal. Something like the Zoom B2. That would give you some experience of a wide range of effects for a low price, the same price as some individual pedals. After that you can decide which effects you like best and maybe start looking around for individual pedals. My 2c.

maybe add the digitech bass synth wah for synth/filter/octave or something.

Im kinda leaning towards a good fuzz and distortion cause I love playing Tool and JC uses alot of distortion and I recently heard slap with fuzz....never really wanted to learnt to REALLY learn to slap until that moment haha.
I tried the Big Muff, Russian model, but I returned it because when I used it my low went straight out of the door.
Then I thought, what if I ran an EQ in front of it? But it was too late.
Would that do anything btw? Im not to savvy on signal chains and all that stuff.
