I tend to go subtle. If I use an effect, it's usually just a touch chorus for a slightly fuller sound on some things. Occasionally I will use overdrive for some edge, but don't like to overdo it.

I use my pedals for subtle sound sculpting. My pedal lineup is all Boss - TU-2 tuner, LMB-3 Bass limiter, SD-1 Super Overdrive, GEB-7 Bass EQ, NS-2 Noise Suppressor, and CEB-3 Bass Chorus. I keep my pedals in two Boss BCB-30 pedalboards, connected up with a 1-foot cable.

I fall somewhere in the middle of "subtle" and "full-on". Currently addicted to overdrive and like using chorus. I'm also heavily considering a Pigtronix Envelope Phaser 2, I'm hoping that it will fill bother the phaser and filter spots in one shot.

I play on an original band, hard rock with blues and a 70's feel to it. Two guitarists, drummer and myself. When the guitarist takes in a solo I use the OD to fill in the gap left by the 2nd guitar, plus sometimes you need a little grit! The chorus is just a nice touch on the more mellow stuff.

Just my 2 cents.

I rarely use effects now, but when I did it was almost always full-on. My favorite was the Torns Peaker... not the most subtle of effects

Full on... Usually have a decent growly tone but crank on the disto to make it huge. I'd like to maybe get into delays flangers and stuff but what I usually play and write doesn't really call for it.

Mine didn't replace both, but it's a nice unit nonetheless.

How is the EP-2 in a band setting?

Bit of both. I always have my overdrive pedal engaged just enough to give the bass some nice grit and cut. I also abuse my fuzz pedal in conjunction with my overdrive for some punishing low-end. I will also use my flanger and delay pedal in some quieter songs purely to get that spacey atmosphere.

At the risk of sounding snarky, it very much depends on the band, and how much frequency room you have to work with.

I perceive a very slight gain drop in the lows when activating it on the LFO setting, and perceive a slight low end gain boost when activating it on the envelope setting. YMMV based on your settings, playing technique, other effects in your chain, and instrument. For me the effects are audible in my band setting, but:

a) I play loud.

b) I am only fighting one guitarist, and drummer, and a vocalist for sonic space.

Everything depends on the particular song. It's anywhere from totally clean to gut wrenching annihilation. The one thing that I always stress when I have a student is that it's important to learn to play cleanly first to get your technique down. After that, never limit your palette to anything but your own imagination!

There's no option for "as a crutch to cover my less-than-adequate bass playing" lol
