I've also come to the realization that no matter what I put on my board, you know what it sounds like in the house/mix? A bass. Joe Public isn't going to know the difference (or care) about what I have on my board. A bit of a startling realization and that led to thinking about how much time, effort and $ I've spent chasing the tone in my head. lol

But seriously, nice catch! I'll admit to a bit of disappointment on my part, when I saw that come up after I had already made a deal on an x-blender. Not that the xotic isn't a worthwhile capable pedal, but that Super Blender??? WOW... just WOW.
Let me know when you get tired of it... |

5sg. | True, most in the crowd don't know or care what your doing tone wise, but... They do know the difference when you're putting your heart into it, and I've always felt that to play your best YOU need that tone you've been working so hard to make happen.
Or...
Maybe I'm just trying to justify spending large chunks of income on my toys...
I dunno. |

I've had pedals that I felt like I was fighting with, and that's not the case with these... I know how to dial them in, and they do exactly what I want. I've never gotten requests to use specific pedals/effects until these boards, which I think is due to the point you make. It comes through in my playing.

Originally Posted by fivestringgecko I've never gotten requests to use specific pedals/effects until these boards, 5sg. | As well as acknowledging ones ability, this is probably one of the best feelings as a player; Having someone take notice those little nuances we put so much effort into. After taking a break of something like 15 years from using effects, I started using again this year, and I remember the look of "oh no, here we go" on my guitar players face. Which of course made his compliments all that much better after I had built a few patches that reinforced what he was playing or enhanced a song.
After spending so much time and effort on your sound, not much can give you the warm and fuzzies like a sincere "Hey man, that tone you had there just gave me goose bumps..." |

5sg. | This - right here - is the reason why I never understood the point of SUBTLE effects usage. If it's subtle, then no one will ever notice. Also why I don't like clean blends. When I use effects, I want people to know that I'm using effects. When I click on squalling wall of fuzz and flanger or something like that, the crowd definitely knows that I'm doing something different. That should be the whole point to effects. All of this is IMHO, of course. Other people are totally free to think and do whatever floats their boat. |

Otherwise I wouldn't be getting specific requests to use certain pedals during certain songs, and my church choir director says stuff like "do you have something to make it more 'sparkly?'" I do also get compliments from audience members about what I do as well.
I don't really want people to notice me in particular, I want them to enjoy the song as a whole. Subtle use of effects lets me change the dynamic of a song without straying too far from locking in with the drummer to create the strongest groove possible. A "wall of fuzz" would get me thrown out of all my current gigs. lol And I have a secret... I don't even actually own a single fuzz pedal! *gasp!* lol

5sg. | Yeah, we are obviously playing different genres of music, which ask for different things from the bassist. Like I said, whatever floats your boat.
In neither of my bands to a play a "normal" bass role (support, background, rhythm section-only beat locking and things like that). In my originals band, bass is the lead instrument. And in my covers band, we intentionally pick our songs so that about half the time, the bass is "lead" or at least the more prominent part than the guitar. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
