Who else gets hated on for using distortions?

Is this something only guitarists do or is it people that prefer certain kinds of music where the bass is clean? My guitarist has only really admitted to not like it once to me but I know he secretly hates me for infringing on his sonic territory.

If used tastefully, there's no stepping on anyone's sonic territory. That goes for any effect used on bass, or guitar.

Depends on the music you're playing, and the way you're using the distortion. If it's intruding on the guitar distortion frequencies then IMHO you're using it wrong.

Well, it really depends on the song, I normally use a pretty high gain overdrive all the time, or a fuzz, but sometimes it doesn't aound right to use distorion in some songs. But I've found that my guitarists activly encourige me using distorion (& bass solos).

I caught a bit of flak for it back in high school, but I was using several different distortion pedals at once. Now I use one dedicated distortion at a time, excluding the VT Bass dirt. Hopefully, the Tech 21 Blonde behaves like the VT Bass, only better in every way.

I'd say I go half and half between distortion and clean. I play heavier music, somewhere around hard rock and alternative metal.

well, unless the distortion sucks as soon as you start adding higher frequencies in your just about always going to be overriding some of the guitar freqs. I'm not canceling out the guitar just some bumping into

When I'm playing in my hard rock/metal band, I have an always-on overdrive, but I never click on any realy distortion except when my guitarist is playing a higher-register melody or a solo. In my other project, I am the lead line, so I use distortion whenever I want.

It's not a problem at all. I'm just asking if anyone else gets hated on. Never asked for help at all.

You should add mind-reading to your band act!

I generally figure that until someone speaks up, there are no issues. I am most emphatically NOT a mind-reader.

I got pretty lucky in my new band and my guitarist is always saying how much more he likes the songs when i have my distortion on instead of the clean tone (for most parts i always like the dirty sound too)

My last band however hated distortion on my bass

Not me.

Then again, I generally go with the rule that when the guitar is distorted or fuzzed out, the bass shouldn't be and vice versa. But of course that's just a guideline and can be broken any time it sounds good.

I think it's also important that you don't lose the low end, or if you do, that you are cognizant of it and are using it for effect. Outside of that it's like any effects use, if it adds positively to the song it's the right effect and if it hurts the song it's the wrong one.

People complain about it every time I turn it on.

Then again, I used to have a nasty tendency to play a bass like a guitar and a guitar like a bass, so maybe they're just scared I'm relapsing.

That said, I happily use all sorts of effects, as well as lots of clean tones - it really all depends on what the song needs.

I don't use distortion much, but I do use my Morely wah pedal as much as I can. That thing is way louder and more absurd and intrusive than any distortion pedal usage I've heard. Makes me feel good

I have a hard-on for using distortion, is that close enough?

Maybe I'll start the "distortion makes me chub club."
