Hi Everyone,
I've had a couple pre-orders so far, but my new fuzz (as someone above mentioned), isn't a regular Pickle Pie with a blend knob, it's a whole revamped circuit tweaked specifically for bass. It's got hybrid FET clip sections, new tone stack, saturation knob has been modded to work even better with the fuzz rolled back for more grimy tones, and of course, a great buffered clean-blend. When a lot of bass players started buying the P Pie (thanks to you guys!) It got me wanting to build a fuzz made just for bass, and try to tackle all of the problems I hear many talking about here.
Don't get me wrong, this is still all built around the skeleton of The Pickle Pie/WHSP because I think the circuit kicks butt, and I think the Pickle Pie kicks butt on guitar or bass. I also kept the quad matched tranny chip as well.
As you may have guessed, Mr. Tripps and his reissues were a motivating factor with trying something new as well!
I wanted to have a go at this circuit so after about 2 months of experimenting and switching things in and out, using my dog as a clipping diode (no, not really), going batty trying to figure out what really "works" and getting yelled at by my wife for coming to bed at 3:30am, I just finished up!
basically it's like this: It's called the Pickle Pie "B" version. Same box, different colored LED, a "B" etched into the side, and a clean blend knob on the side.
Similar circuit, but this is a whole different animal.
I'll have audio clips, pics and all that up on my site soon, but I just couldn't resist posting about it since I just got it all done, and saw this topic.
Sorry for the shameless plug, but I hope those of you who know me know that I wasn't posting just to plug, I was posting because I'm really excited about finishing this pedal, and I can't wait to get TalkBass's input once a few get out there!
Also, I in no way mean to say this is "better" than the regular Pickle Pie. It's just different, and I'm sure many would call the regular Pickle Pie "better" if that was the sound they loved. If you love your pickle pie, KEEP IT! and be glad you found the fuzz you love. This new P Pie sounds totally different, and is not just a "better" version of your pedal.
About clean blends: If you are looking for a clean blend bass fuzz, just know this. Clean blends are not the answer to all your fuzz problems. On paper they sound that way, but they are just another simple tool towards helping you get what you want from your rig. Most of the time, I've found that they are most useful when used very sparingly, with a good fuzz. They don't magically make it sound like you have 2 rigs, a clean and a dirty, but once you dial them in, they be a great way to get a fat sound that doesn't cause you to lose all your lows.
Some may disagree with me on this, but a clean blend on bass takes a while to learn to use. They are ridiculously simple, but once you get out of your bedroom and into the rehearsal room with a band, we all know all new-gear bets are off!
man what a rant!
