Who powers their Maxon CP09Pro+ with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Plus??

Sign in to disble this ad
I just want to make sure this work before I go plugging mine in. I had one before & it went bad. I sent it back to Godlyke & they sent me a new one (Awesome service!). I don't want to screw it up if this had anything to do with the other one going bad. no one has given me a solid answer if it's okay to do. If I can't power it from this PP2, I'll prob just sell it & get a compressor that I can. i go through batteries waaaaaaaay too fast. Thanks ya'll. -john

There's no way on earth that plugging in the CP9P+ caused the PP2 to "go bad".

It's possible that the outlets of the PP2 don't have enough available current to adequately feed the charge pump in the CP9P+, but if that's the case then you would just get a temporary symptom of the pedal not working while it is plugged in to the PP2, and it's sort of conceivable that other outlets of the PP2 might act faulty at that same time, temporarily. Both the pedal and the PP2 would resume working perfectly as soon as you disconnect one from the other.

To be clear though, I'm not saying for sure that will happen--only saying what maybe could happen.

Ah yeah, I misread. While charge-pump circuits do what they claim to do, IME they are finicky and prone to "issues". So it is plausible that powering it with inadequate current caused a hiccup or failure in the charge pump in the Maxon.

Yeah, I wish someone had a straight answer about how to power these with something other than a batttery. I used my previous one with the Voodoo Labs power supply & it was fine for 2 months or so. Then all of a sudden it started sounding distorted & intermittent.

Possibly the pedal just went bad. I don't know. Maybe it had nothing at all to do with anything other than it simply failed.

Well, as far as "straight answers" go, a Boss PSA120 works just fine. I did a quick Google of the current draw from the CP9Pro+, and on the first page was a thread on this subject in which it's reported that Voodoo Labs does not guarantee compatibility between the PPII and any of the Maxon "Pro" series, due to the high initial current draw of their charge pumps.

So you can use a brick supply that offers say 300 mA or more per isolated outlet. Or you can use a high-current daisy-chain supply, with the caveat that the Maxon will not be compatible with all other pedals that might share the same daisy chain. Kind of a crap shoot there, with the daisy chains--you have to experiment to find compatibilities.

Mine works fine on the high current outlets, but doesn't work on the 100mA outlets.

I've been using a CP9Pro+ on a 1Spot daisy chain shared with 12 other pedals for the past five months with no issues at all.
Was going to switch over to a PP2+ soon so I'm glad you posted this.

Maybe related: I bought a CS9Pro chorus used on the bay and have experienced awful clipping from it. Maybe the previous owner ruined the pump circuit. That would explain the headroom clipping issue.
Will GodLyke exchange the unit if your not the original owner...imma look into this.
Thanks for posting.

Hey Ba55Man1ac, do you have the dip switch "on" or in normal position on you Voodoo Labs?

Normal position. I would try the "on" position but it's a bit of a pricey paperweight if I fry it!

Isn't that the truth. So I plugged it in to 5 & left the switch to Normal & it does work. I thought they all had the same output unless the dip switches were in the "on" position. Do you know if this is the case?

They all have the same voltage output in the Normal position, 9V DC, but different current capacity - outputs 5 & 6 are able to provide 250mA each, the rest 100mA.
