Sign in to disble this ad
i play on a death/doom metal band and i face a big problem: the band's only got one guitarist and when he's soloing we dont get such an heavy sound cuz i dont have a distortion pedal. wht kind of distortion should i get:
-overdrive
-fuzz
-distortion

plz name the pedal when you pick a type of distortion.

i really like the fuzz and i've been close to buying a zvex wholly mammoth, but then i looked at the price (500$ ). i also wanted to try Boss' fuzz pedal but didn't had the chance. is it any good?

I gave this advice in a thread yesterday, and give it again...

if your guitarist is soloing a dirt pedal is not going to help the sound spectrum.
You are going to lose the bass that is present during the rest of the song.
Bad idea IMO and IME. I've been there.
When my guitarist is soloing, I think: "yes... room to breath for my regular bass sound".
Then it is not the time for me to pull out distortion... but to let my regular bass sound shine alongside the guitarist's solo. Or I follow him in the solo.
(I don't play doom, but more prog metal.)

Buying a distortion just to fill the gap is a bad idea. It's not your responsibility to become the rhythm guitarist for a few measures.

However, I don't know doom music or doom metal... but I think you could use a fuzz pedal anyway for general purpose.

No... not the BOSS one. I have it and I love it.... but it is very harsh and synthy.
Loses low end and rips your head off. I don't use it much. It's not useful in a band unless you want to sound like a synth or guitar.
Look for something else that is more useful and can add to your role as bassist.

The Wooly Mammoth is cool, but yeah, expensive.

EHX Bass Big Muff would be a good first fuzz.
Or Malekko B:Assmaster is a pearl.

Or what I use often, Big John Hairy Balls.

I don't play doom, but I used to play bass in a band with a very noodly textural guitarist. I played up the neck a lot, and would use an octaver to fill in the lower end a bit while he was off in the rafters with his digital delay.
If you're goingto get a dirt box, make sure it has a blend pot so you don't get all that high end noise and nothing underneath.

Distortion pedals I would recommend for metal.

1.Digitech bass overdrive/distortion pedal
2.Tech 21 xxl bass edition distortion pedal
3.Boss md-2 mega distortion pedal
4.MXR bass d.i+

Since you like fuzz, I would recommend the devi ever hyperion. it's a fuzz pedal that sounds more like a distortion.

I play in a heavy project...I know exactly what you mean.

I use a GGG-tuned Muff clone with my Ric or a GGG Brassmaster clone with my Casady hollow body generally all the time and use octave combinations via the EHX HOG to fill space. I HIGHLY recommend looking into multiple octaves to fill the space you're losing.

Tech 21 XXL bass edition. Try playing power chords once in a while to fill up space.
