why is a compressor imortant

i see alot of people talking about compressors for there bass in their pedal boards. what does it do and is it useful? im looking into a sansamp right now because i have a 3 band EQ on my amp and could use the modeling but should i get a compressor also?

A compressor will keep some notes from being louder than others. Useful when recording or if your bass has a few particularly bright notes., (Basses are prone to have some.) Piano players like compressors for the same reasons. I used to have one but didn't use it much because liked to have my own control over dynamics.
