Why does my Metal-Zone hate my Schecter?

Sign in to disble this ad
Let me preface this possibly silly question with the fact that I have normally been a 6 string guitar guy, and just recreationally at that.

Recently I picked up a Schecter Stiletto with the Schecter Diamond series active pickups just to mess with something different. Not only is it my first bass but first anything with active pickups as well. Anyway, running it through an Acoustic B100 combo, when I kick on the Metal-Zone I get a crazy-makes-blood-shoot-out-of-your-ears screeeeeech from hell. Just to see if it was a disaggreement between the pedal and the amp I plugged my Strat into the B100 with the Metal-Zone and it works fine.

Is it the active pickups that are causing this?

I think it's just a case of too much metal for one man.

Maybe your Schecter knows your actually a guitar player

Haha just kidding. Glad you've seen the light; if you browse these forums, you'll find bass is a magical instrument, and many of us here are ex-guitarists who are now strictly bassists.

As for your question, I have no idea. My active bass has worked fine in any pedal I've plugged it in to. I know some other people here have the Metal-Zone, you should get some responses soon.

Obvious question: feedback issues?

+1. Probably too much gain. Otherwise, it should have zero problems with an active bass.

Feedback can be a problem for bassists as much as guitarists. The circumstances that lead to it are just a tad different (IME, cranked low mids and bass can contribute to it under certain conditions).

Try turning down the gain A LOT first, and then gradually turn it up after you've plugged in and started playing a few notes. That way, you can figure out which setting it starts to feed back on, and you can avoid it.

Also, if you're playing too close to your combo, that can sometimes contribute.

It's not often you hear about feedback in a bedroom situation, though. That's usually a problem for those of us who play live, play loud, and play with high gain.

Thanks for the help. Turns out having the lows cranked on both the amp and pedal with those fat bass strings was causing all the feedback ruckus. Guess I could always have it cranked with the strat on both ends because it just doesn't have the lows to matter. With the pedal set fairly level if I just do all the tweaking at the amp it seem to work fine.

Thanks.
