why does this sound good

Sign in to disble this ad
i know that this is a subjective question but i was just hoping that there is some sort of scientific resone for this.
here's the set up: jazz bass with chromes i to bad monkey in to bass muff with the bass boost on and then into amp. now i have a great clean tone and i love the bad monkey and the muff sounds ok but damn it all it sounds killer with both on. but what really sends this bad boy in to super cool sound land is when i run both the muff and the overdrive on with my guitars volume at 25%. my mind would tell me that i'm reducing my out put only to have it boosted again "redundant i know" in to the muff. it makes no seance but god damn does it scream and cream out of my fifteens. so what gives all wise people of the talk bass interweb. cause i'm thinking that there might a custom bmp in my soldering irons future.

You cut the mids too much. It got drowned out by my ceiling fan.

By rolling the volume back, you are reducing the amount of clipping (distortion) on your Bad Monkey which will also alter the clipping from your fuzz. You might be able to get the same sound from reducing the gain on your Bad Monkey.

just tried that, reducing the gain on the bad monkey. but it lost a lot of that sweet dark creamy compressed tone it got close but still no joy.

Adding impedance to the bass path by running down the volume could load down the pickups and alter the tone. It usually rolls off highs is how I understand that to work. That could be the complimenting factor.

I think we've just about reached the limit of my knowledge. Anything I say beyond what I have is about half guesswork. I just know that rolling down the volume will result in altered clipping and rolling off the highs has been known to result in dark and creamy (or dull and muddy, depending on your preferences ) tones. Any more sciency answers will have to come from someone else .

Good luck.

Clearly your pedals were made of the finest silks in all the land, blessed and ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama himself. Your chromes are probably hand spun out of metal from the crashed ship in Roswell. And your speakers cones are made of 5000 year old papyrus found in the dunes of Giza.

You're one lucky bassist.

thanks smart ass but no really i am just trying to understand whats going on here and other than pure duplication what if any could be done to repeat said sound. and besides every one knows that mummy wrappings are were killer tone comes from and no the strings aren't from Roswell there from melted down angel tears.
