Hi,
am new in TalkBass, although I have been lurking here since long time.
Am also new with sound catching, I have never covered a band up.
But in this case I badly need to get my bass sound as closer as I can get to the bass in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th20RfvdXKo
I think there is some sort of valve drive in this sound, or maybe some light muff distortion...
(I LOVE THIS SONG BTW)
Any idea? We are writing a new song and I really wish to get a similar sound for it.
I would appreciate any sort of hint
Thank you in advance,
Sergio.
MY CURRENT BASS GEAR:
- 1980 Ibanez Musician MC840Ds
- Trace Elliot 7210H (just the head)
- HARTKE transporter TP410 4x10"
- Trace Elliot 1513 1x15"
- Trace Elliot Dual Compressor
- Ernie Ball VP-Jr

| | | | I saw them live about a month back. Their bassist was definitely using a fuzz but I couldn't see exactly it was. |

| | | Hi again, was still editing my post and got already 3 replies
WOW i love this forum
@sanfordandsonny: that's a good idea, thank you!!
@moggieman: I am watching other videos right now, yes, he uses a "white" thing but i cannot get what it is, and I am not sure he uses the same gear for that song
@bass4worship: thank you, for that I have no time, just using my night hours to improve the sound
@all: Question: what differentiates a valve drive from a fuzz (muff-like) sound?
Thanks guys! |

In my opinion thats the way they got the sound on that recording, probably rom the drum overhead mic.
A reverb or delay might get you near it if you play around with them.

| | | | @crazyBassClown: yes, it is also the spaciousness which is attracting me. I think I will try with a light muff and reverb.
The guy (Dono) uses gk1001RB when he gigs around, so not really valve distorsion from the amp. I wonder if giving it some valve preamp would help. Going to test a HK Tube Factor this week
@254_stringer: eheheh you made me laugh, but honestly, I am wishing to sound like that at least for this song :-D
tnx again |

If you can try out an ART Tube MP with the muff I always recommend starting at the least inexpensive option first and the MP is also helpful in other audio applications for $30-40!

good luck

| | | update update update ok, maybe it's not the thread of the year, but i managed to get in touch with the guys playing:
the bass player uses a " cheap bass through fuzz war pedal through a DI" (quoted)
Which does not say too much about the DI, but enough for the distorsion gear.
I see it's not easy to get a fuzz war in europe.
Any suggestion, which other pedal reminds of this fuzz war thingy?
Ciao e grazie!

Quite similar, at the same time more gentle! |

Get some wild fuzz pedal, downtune your strings, and just crank gain, go to town |

| | | | Cool! this talkbass is giving me lots again.
Thank you Matt & Valerus.
I have loved the sound of all SFT demos I have listened to in the internet, and you are right, it's not the kind of effect I am looking for, after thinking about what you wrote.
I love it though, but it's another toy i can't find down here.
So you suggest tuning the strings down, using a fuzz. since it will be my next buy, now, you get the direction of what I am going to play with it. any suggestion would be apppreciated!
Ciao,
Sergio. |

Seriously though, I guess a browse around Thomann and other european sites would be your best bet. Lots of threads on most fuzz pedals here with soundclips if you search for them...

Ciao,
Sergio. | Get the SFT if you want, and try it out. It won't get this sound but it's a fun pedal. I use it in settings where I don't want my full-on overdrive (Way Huge Pork Loin does that for me) and where if I dig into the strings I get a heavenly "amp breakup" tone. Glorious. Quote:

I've seen TWDY live twice and I could never make out what he had for distortion. I assumed it was an old, beat-up Muff but if the band says its a Fuzz War, go get one.
If you want to emulate the sound, I'd say bite the bullet and buy a Fuzz War. |
