Woah, this pedal can do THAT too?! (rediscovering old equipment)

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Case-in-point if the topic seems a little unclear...

I've had my Boss SYB-3 synth pedal for several years now, and contrary to popular opinion, I love the little thing, I've been able to get some great sounds out of it and learned how to overcome the trigger/tracking issues. But ever since I initially got it, it has pretty much stayed on maybe 2-3 settings. That is, once I found a sound I liked, I pretty much just stuck with it and never branched out.

Fast forward to last night, I was bored and decided to have a little tweak-session with some of my gear. I started messing around with the SYB and ventured up into some of the higher (and commonly thought of as "useless") modes and came up with a sound that I thought was pretty freakin cool.

Starts in mode 9 then tried the other direction of the wave shape in mode 8. It's by no means useful for ALL situations but kinda fun for some spacey jamming. And looking back, I think I'm going to turn up the dry signal a bit more to give it a little more low oomph. Sounds a bit harsh to my ears in retrospect.

Anyone else have a similar story of rediscovering old gear?

I just recently pulled my old Univox tape exho unit out just to mess with. I have been gassin for reveb lately and I ended up getting awesome sounding reverb out of the Univox. I liked it so much that it went on my board. I have had that thing sittin up not doin anything for a couple of years now.

This is the reason for me re-buying the Boss PS-3. There are loads of sounds in it, you can find something new every time.

You had that thing sitting around? for shame!

Back on topic, an ehx Steel Leather fell into my lap the other day. I've owned one before and I flipped it, but since then, I've switched from stainless steel strings to nickels and flatwounds, so the SL is way more useful to me. It's easy to overdo but it's great.

But the new application I found is this: they guy I sold my last one to mentioned how it helped him push open the envelope of his FX25. I regretted never trying it with envelope following effects so I gave it a try as soon as I got this one.

It works great with my Maxon AF-9, not only helping push the filter open with a lowish output passive bass, but also at making the already wet-sounding filter sound even wetter! Envelope mode on the ehx Polyphase gets more dramatic and just plain funkier. It's easy to overdo, but with judicious use it makes my playing dynamics more... dynamic?

Careful though, it doesn't play nice with every filter. Sounds like wispy butthair with a Bassballs, for instance. Also, I wouldn't recommend it to players who already have a bright sound.
