Well, Birdsong makes a passive Varitone box from leftover wood. It's not really a pedal, though... more of a simple in-line device.

Is this what you saw?

If you search "varitone" or "gibson varitone", you'll find more info.

Basically, it is a passive circuit with a selection of pre-set tone filters. Think of it as a passive tone control on steroids. I use mine primarily as a studio tool (in fact, it is indispensable to me), but it will work in any situation. They work far better with passive instruments & generally need to be first in the signal chain. If you search hard enough, somebody posted some clips somewhere here on tb...

Scotch nailed it. Like him, I've found that my Bbox works better if a.) it's first in the signal chain, and b.) run with a passive instrument and c.) it's subtle enough that it's more useful for recording than for live gigging. I LOVE it for recording, but people may not hear it much live (at least not enough to justify pedal-board real estate)

Scott at Birdsong uses a different varitone as the tone control in his basses than he does in the BBoxes. He's done at least 2 or 3 with the BBox varitone built into the bass (mine and one other I know of - I'm assuming he's probably done it more than that).

I'm spoiled - no interest in going back to tone knobs.
