Your advice for a new pedalboard.

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,

I'm now buying some effects: Gas, you know...

I don't want to make bad choice( I know that it's when you're trying an effect that you know if you love it or no)

SO:
Distorsion: Thinking about the tasty electronix GeminiGrive
Phaser: Thinking about Boss ph-3 or Akai Intelliphase (but I'm very not sure)
Compressor: Thinking about Maxon cp9 pro
Delay: I'm lost...
Synth:Thinking about the Akai deep impact
Fuzz: Muff Pi (already have it)
Envelope/filter: The Old 80's dod fx25 version(already have it)
Octaver: boss oc-2

So, I want to have your advice! I want to know what you'll be choosing (even if the effect isn't on the list).

Thanks,
Ben.

( sorry for my english )

It's hard to say whether those are the right effects for you or not as it depends on your playing style, gear, music type etc.

But most of them are quality pedals. Just a couple notes:

Have you tried a Deep Impact? Because they are big and very expensive and you should be sure it does what you want before buying it used.

The Boss PH-3 is not a phaser I'd recommend to very many people. I had one for a while, specifically because i wanted the fake, plastic sound it puts out. But it also cuts lows. Depending on your style, I'd probably recommend a number of other phasers first.

+1 im biased- but try an octavius squeezer before you buy something overpriced and obsolete. also- i can vouch for the ph-3 being a crap phaser as ive owned one. no bass- would only work with a blend- and even then its still a pos. as for delay- i had a dd-7 i really liked- and can recommend.

Ok, TOOL460002, you mean the octavius squeezer instead of the Deep impact? Both do the same thing?

Thanks for the answer, It's very helpful!

Choice of pedals depends on what you play.... you have a lot of quality stuff there, though.

I would pass on the Deep Impact for now-- they're discontinued, rare, and have gone bloody expensive since a certain bassist who shall remain nameless started using one in Muse. It's also digital, which if you're an analog-type guy like me, you might not care for. I haven't used one myself, but it struck me as having a very 80's-style sound.

For a compressor, I haven't tried the Maxon, but I highly recommend the Jacques Fat Burner if you're looking for Tony Levin-style compression.

The OC-2 is excellent.

The MXR Phase 90 phaser is beauty in simplicity.

The MXR Carbon Copy is a good analog delay, but the Boss DD series is pretty good too- I prefer the DD-3, which is an older version.

Thanks The lurker for your advice. For phaser what else should I choose? I'm playing several music styles: Stevie wonder, Red hot chili peppers, muse, old rock, Pop....etc. The effect will be mostly for my band. Our music is Alternative/rock/funk/pop.... So It has to be versatile.

The MXR Phase 90 is like a standard, very common, and works well. But, I don't care for it. That doesn't mean you wouldn't though. The Maxon compressor is excellent. I don't think you'd be disappointed with it at all, very safe bet. Back to phasers, and sticking with pedals that you could easily find, check out some Electro-Harmonix stuff, like the Small Stone, or for alot more fun, the Electric Stereo Mistress, (which is not a phaser, but a chorus/flanger), but alot of wacky fun. Good luck in your search.

Based on the style you're discussing, maybe an envelope phaser would suit you. There's the new version of the EHX Polyphase and the Pigtronix EP-1. Both are solid though I personally like the EP-1 better.

For a straight phaser, I like the Nano Small Stone for its dark character and the HBE Psilocybe for how it reacts with dirt. The Subdecay Quasar is very tweakable.
