Your Effects Pedal Usage : Overdrive ?

Sign in to disble this ad
same as before...
I thought maybe we could discuss one effect at a time?

What is your equipment chain?

What OverDrive Pedal do you use?

When do you use it?
for example during which part of which tune?

At what settings?

etc.

This thread will get a lot more varied answers than the chorus one, overdrive is an extremely subjective topic.

When you say "overdrive" does this encompass distortion and fuzz aswell? There are probably more different oppinions on fuzz out there than there are threads in this forum.

Personally, I use an ElectroHarmonix Metal Muff, it's a gnarly sounding pedal, that retains a lot of definition. I run the treble at 1 o'clock, the mids at 3 o'clock and the bass between 2 and 5 o'clock depending on the room I'm in. The distortion knob is at 2 o'clock and the top boost is always off.

I use it for lead parts, and bits where the texture of the band needs to be really thick.

I'll assume overdrive as a traditional... light grit. I use overdrive as a thickener on my fretless bass. Usually I turn it on to add emphasis to a section (verse or chorus). I often leave it on for whole songs with that bass just to give me a little 'more'.

I use a BJFE Blueberry. I either have the drive all the way down for what I consider medium overdrive or at 9:00 for what I think borders on light fuzz. The tone knob is usually around 9:00 as well. It also sounds good with the drive down and my bass vol rolled off a bit for light drive but then I have to tweak it's volume and it's pretty subtle in a mix. So I usually go with just one setting. I'll usually keep it on for the whole song. I frequently screw up my cues when I try to switch effects mid-song.

I using the Inoculator boost/overdrive (my modded version of a Cream Pie with the Hog's Foot/Mole bass boost) at the start of my chain. Sounds great going to fuzz pedals. I have a VT Bass on the end set for some light grit as well.

I use an EHX Germanium OD. Pretty much always on for fast/aggressive/angry songs. Knobs are usually set: gain-2:00, bias-4:00, volts-2:00

EBS Valve Drive. Not used as much as it should, more of a kick it on during guitar solo's kinda thing. My Valve Drive is not permanently attatched to either of my boards, so it can be part of either one, or used by itself, though that hasn't happened yet.

Did you try the EBS MultiDrive? If so, how would describe the difference?

I've got a T-Rex Bassjuice. Its pretty good at what it does, but I've recently decided I'm more of a Fuzz guy than an OD/Distortion guy so I'm probably going to get rid of it for that reason.

My signal chain at the moment is pretty much bass-->BJ-->EHX SEM-->Amp.

Its basically a grit adder at the moment. I don't really use the boost function at all and to be perfectly honest am not really sure when I would at the moment, but I'll frequently just leave it on with very light gain while I'm playing. Every so often I'll crank the gain, but that's more to achieve a specific sound when I'm trying to play something specific rather than a noodling about type scenario.

General light grit that I use most of the time comes from one side of my KoT. Occasionally I add my Sunkist Squeeze (OS compressor clone modded for bass) to get a more squashed grit.

When I need to kick it up a notch... I either add my Thor or the other side of the KoT.

This track has the SS and KoT through out the tune and the Thor kicked on for the Chorus sections.
http://www.myselfalone.com/tracks/le...-Rescue_Me.mp3

These two have a different compressor in front of the KoT for the bulk of the tracks and the other side of the KoT stacked on top for the leads
http://www.myselfalone.com/tracks/mp...Convoluted.mp3
http://www.myselfalone.com/tracks/mp...t_-_Swishy.mp3

All three are with my Bee and have my Ibanez AD-9 at the end of the chain prior to amp / sound card. The first track posted what live through an Ampeg 1x15" combo owned by the drummer. The other two are bass -> FX -> sound card.

As far as settings, I tend to play with a box to find the one setting I like most. I rarely tweak them much once I get the sound I'm using. The KoT yellow side (one I use most) has the dip switch at lowest, the gain at 9 o'clock and the tone at 1 o'clock... level to suit. The red side has the dip switch to highest, gain at 3 o'clock, tone to 11 o'clock and again level to suit. For my Thor... Gain is set to about 10 o'clock with the 'Bottom' switch on and the 'Bright' switch off.

I just picked up one of these a couple weeks ago ,...and I love it...LOVE IT . As opposed to your need or want it usage Ive got it running full time at the end of my chain for full time sizzle parallel with my clean signal . When I want distortion...I stomp on the Sansamp GT2 earlier in the chain .

Really helps to push the song if needed.

The Electronix Gemni Drive is the best I've played

My Fulltone (set for light OD) or Hematoma (full blown) is almost always on. I do not try to cop other bass players sound anymore. Whether I play a cover or original song, I use the sound I want.

Barber LTD SR. really fat sounding low gain overdrive without too much tone alteration. I use it for grindy parts and spike TV commercial riffs.

Volume set to taste, with tone at 11:00 and drive at about 2:00.

I use a DOD overdrive plus fx50 after my digitech compression.
Grit: level 3 oclock; tone 10 - 9 depending on room; drive 12-1
When I want a big full overdriven tone (smoke on the water kinda thing)

Fuzz: level 3 oclock; tone 10 - 9 depending on room; drive 3-4
I use this one when I try to copy keyboard synth bass or a funky-fuzzy tone. used on The doors-break on through

Depending on the acoustics of the room, I´ll just add a little more neck pickup if I want more bottom end.

I use a Fender Jazz bass deluxe 24V & a GK Neo700/112 w/Neo 112 extension cab

I use a Sans Amp bass driver. its awesome. I also use a Boss SD1. I like it a lot. It gets pretty mean sounding. I also crank my amp. My tone is very edgy.
