Your top five - High Fidelity Anyone?

Sign in to disble this ad
For those of you who have seen High Fidelity, you should get this thread. I'm asking for your top five pedals in a given category. You pick the category. Some of us are fuzz heads, some of us are filter heads, some are compression heads... The point is, I figure why ask for your top five in a specific category when we have experts in so many different areas.

Anyone want to play?

Top five compressor pedals (not in any order, and subject to frequent changes of my opinions):

-Demeter
-EBS
-Maxon CP9Pro+
-Frantone Sandwich
-TRex Comp Nova

The BJFE Pine Green, CAE V-Comp, and Retrospec Squeezebox might be better than some of those, but they are such rare birds that I decided counting them may not be useful.

haha, Bongo, I can tell you are very used to trying to prudently guide people on their compressor search (which is awesome by the way!).

I was hoping you'd submit a compressor list but I am very surprised to not see the A-Designs in your list. I'm guessing maybe that's because I specified pedal in the OP?

BTW, I love reading your reviews. I don't use compression, I just read them for fun

Yeah I took the 'pedal' thing literally. I actually wouldn't have posted a list if you were including all formats, because there would be too many good arguments for greater than five of them.

I actually haven't tried any lunchbox-format comps yet (like the A-Designs), not unless you count the rack units which are also available in an equivalent lunchbox package like certain dbx or Valley units. Someday, when I'm not desperately in debt.

I generally hope that the tone of my reviews is "good reading". Thx!

My top 5 phasers (just in terms of sound):

1. MuTron Phasor II
2. Roland AP-2
3. Prophecy Sound Infinitphase
4. Maxon PH-350
5. Toadworks Phantasm

Just missing the cut: EHX Nano Small Stone, DOD 595.

It's actually hard to place the Infinitphase. There are others with a better basic phaser sound, but it is just so tweakable and is capable of such a range of phase tones as well as craziness.

Yep, RCollins nailed it. The TLSF is just another rung up the ladder of the same fuzz family.

Superfuzz < Audio Monk Fuzz Potion < TLSF

Grygrx.......I would have thought that the supercollider would have been up there or at least would have gotten a honorable mention.

Nice list. I agree, at least with the ones I've tried. Even the CC that I returned sounded fantastic.

See I've always seen grygrx as 'the fuzz guy' bongo is definately 'the comp guy' and IMO the BigO is 'the phaser guy' so right there you have 5 highly reccomended fuzzes, comps and phasers, pay attention kids, I know I am

Is there a reason behind calling it the tentacle love??

My top 5 filters, in no order:

1. DOD FX25
2. EHX Q-Tron+
3. Moog MF-101
4. Maxon AF9
5. EBS BassIQ

The 3Leaf Groove Regulator sounds like it might have a home in this top 5, but I haven't had the chance to play one yet.

It's a quality pedal no doubt. It's still a muffish pedal and I decided I like my Ram Head better in that category and the bass big muff as well.
